All in my consideration of catastrophic. Gas would ramp to 6.00 a gallon for sure if either Exxon BR or Norco went down.

I cried watching that. My wifes pawpaws camp is in butte la rose. We went out there on Tuesday, I had never seen so many cars and trucks on the roads. Was really sad. He says his property took two feet of water in 73 and that's what he's hoping for again. Seems like there's a lot more water this time around though.

Did he go to that meeting? That USACE guy seemed a little rough around the edges, just during the 15 feet part...considering he was telling everyone they were going to lose everything. I understand there's no easy way of doing it, but I was caught a little off-guard.

on the edit. long day.

Everyone knows that the USACE does not want to hurt people, but some of us have to be sacrificed for the good of the whole. I say that as someone who was one of the first to "hit the beach." The colonel's nerves are frayed too. Again, not right, but understandable.

some on 870am today said that a possible closer of the river do to high water would cause a 275 million dollar per day loss to the US economy.

Yeah, I understand that. I just feel for those people. I don't know if I would have been able to do what he did.

He was like that to try to dissuade the "I'm not leaving" crowd

That's fricked up, but what can the COE do? They have to open the Morganza gates.

I am pretty sure the Corps bought floodway easements over every inch of the property in the Spillway. I know that they mail out notices every year. No one wants anyone to be hurt or displaced. I am sorry that this is disruptive to anyone's way of life. But this is a risk of living in a floodway. And as others have remarked, this land would have been under water since at least 73 if it were not for the Corps holding the River back.

That's a really good point. I forget that even after Katrina, people are still stubborn enough to stay.

Sad as it is, put it in perspective. This event will directly affect one half of one percent of the people who were flooded out in Katrina.

He had to be rough for that crowd. Some of those people are "live off the swamp" types like the brothers on Swamp People

Great post. I feel for anyone affected my this, but unless a levee breaches in either NOLA or BR, they aren't even comparable as events.

It is indeed an unfortunate situation for those involved. My heart goes out to them. I'm old enough to remember the 73 flood, best I remember with much the same results, although not this bad. Not gonna bash the COE, but I really don't think the COE is prepared to handle this kind of water level. No fault of theirs, just looking at epic/historic flood levels.

Don't bet your life on it.

I am going to speak in rounded terms. In the Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway the USACE never even bothered to obtain easements for over 50,000 acres. Of the remaining 80,000 acres the easements vary from allowing landowners to sue for damages to ancient in the sense that the USACE didn't bother to update them when its operational plan changed.

If I owned land in the Morganza Spillway then I'd fork a out a grand or whatever it cost to conduct an abstract on my property. Of course there is probably a class action attorney who will be happy to do that at no charge.
