I know for a fact that these people that line in these places get a letter EVER YEAR informing them that they live in a flood plain and should plan accordingly. I know it because I have seen the letters myself.
Now if they choose to ignore the letters that is their own fault.

This may the be the most ignorant thing that I have heard in a while. This man lives in a flood plain. Apparently he does not know what this means.

How can people in Stephensville not have flood insurance, Yet I am in BR miles from the river and I was forced to buy flood insurance.
No shite. My house is 53ft above sea level and I have to have it in Zachary.

All networks are playing up this angle.

Any news network will try to play this angle because it stirs emotions and it generates readers.

You can always buy it from the state. Or choose not to buy a home there.

I really do feel bad for the guy, but he should have known the danger. I understand it's easy for me to say this since i live in baton rouge, but him saying that bs about saving the rich is ignorant. I hope his family is ok, but don't blame us when you live in FLOOD ZONE and DONT have insurance

Read some of the comments. Some of those folks are certifiably insane. One person even suggested that this was all a ploy for the oil companies to steal people's land. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at these people.

If his house is free & clear or his mortgage isn't federally insured (credit union/local bank), he isn't required to have flood. At this point though; if you live below i-10, and have a FNMA/FHLMC/VA/FHA/USDA mortgage, you pretty much have to have flood insurance. The amount you pay is based on the base flood elevation. If the guy has been there for years, he probably didn't need flood insurance. Flood is subsidized by the federal govenment to make it affordable; if not you can get a policy from Lloyds put it is astronomical is you live in a coastal or flood plain.

I realize all this. Which is why I said it is available and no one forced him to live there.

quote:Anyone can buy flood insurance no matter where they live. You can live on top of mount rainer in Washington and still buy flood insurance if you want it. The only difference is that it's cheaper if you're not in a flood plain.

A lot of insurance companies will tell you wrong... that you can't get flood insurance for a particular area. That's only because they don't want to sell it. They don't make any money on it.
NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) is funded by the federal government and funding for it is re-approved every year by congress.
Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't buy it. They're fricking liars.

Like when you live in a city with a fishbowl topography?
Totally different. These individuals receive notice each year that they own/live within a designated floodway.
While yes, people are not forced to live in New Orleans, it is designed to be protected by a series of levees and pumps. Morganza is designed to dump water.

I didn't see bias against opening the spillway, just compassion for those affected. The media is pretty bad, but sometimes they just present the way it is. What was untrue or suggested that something else should have been done in that broadcast?

Did you read the article?
quote:
"It's all about saving Baton Rouge and New Orleans while they flood people down here," Wiggins said, pointing out that most people in his neighborhood did not carry flood insurance.
"So I guess it's all about saving the rich and burying the poor?" he asked.

Failing to open the spillway would have put New Orleans at risk of flooding that, according to computer models, would eclipse that seen during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. About 80 percent of the city was flooded by Katrina and 1,600 people were killed. In addition to threatening densely populated areas, lower Mississippi flooding was a risk for as many as eight refineries and at least one nuclear power plant alongside the river. The refineries make up about 12 percent of the nation's capacity for making gasoline and other fuels.
It did.

anyone can buy flood insurance through the federal flood insurance program. I don't know however if you live in the spillway area ie Butte La Rose.

Yeah Morganza was built to look at. Know where you live.
-----------------------------------------------
You guys do realize almost of of these towns were there before the spillway right? So back in 1954 i'm sure all these people down river were informed that they were building a place upriver that would flood there homes everytime the government deeemed it necessary.I'm sure they sent a letter stating that. I keep hearing from all the people on the board how they were given money to move but no one has produced any evidence of such a thing. So your telling me if you were already living at your home and someone gave you a letter every year that you have a chance of flooding you would up and move with them not supplying you any way to do it financially. These are not rich people. I understand why this is being done but some of you morons need to get off your high horse and give most of these people credit because if i lost everything i would be pissed over this move.
