Seems like the real trouble area is from around Greenville to Baton Rouge, especially around Natchez on the Louisiana side. Unfortunately the White, St. Francis, and the Arkansas are all backed up and flooding much of low lying Arkansas already. Just talked with some family friends in Ferriday and they have taken most of the possessions they intend to keep out of the area. They have pictures of the 1927 flood which put water up to the third floor of their house. They are leaving Sunday with no intentions of returning for a couple of months if it gets bad. This sounds worse every day.

I would be interested in knowing the crest in 73 at Natchez.

General question - do the forecasts take into account river height if one or more of the spillways are opened? I'm assuming they don't since there is only one number given, so is there any way to determine the effect they might have on crest heights? Educated guesses welcome...

On another note, my main concern is more of security... when I was at UNO studying this stuff I did a paper on ORCS, and got some pretty good pictures of Morganza, etc, very up close and personal. In fact, too up close and personal. If I were the Corps, I'd put a few more patrols around the area. It's wayyy too easy for someone with ulterior motives to redirect the Mississippi river at high stage when something like this happens.

They have regular patrols during flood watch

The more affluent folks from Vidalia area have snatched up all storage space and rental properties in Adams county(high side of river).

They have family in Ruston and Shreveport so that's where most of their belongings have headed. Apparently moved a lot of stuff the last week or so while this was brewing. I'd imagine their farm lands are going to take a serious hit unfortunately.

Isn't Jonesville on the west bank of the Ouachita? Is that the high bank or is it still pretty low in relation to the Delta?

I wasn't sure about elevation exactly. The only time I've been through there was for a hunt over a decade ago at Catahoula lake.

I know the grain elevator in St Joseph is moving all of their grain to Jonesville. We were actually contracted to deliver wheat to the elevator in St Joe next week once we start cutting, but they are instead paying us to haul it to Jonesville. So apparently Bunge is confident in Jonesville staying dry. Either that or they have absolutely no other option.

I talked to a guy at the convenience store at lunch who had a USACE emergency operations shirt on. He said they were currently checking all the levees in Tensas parish. I asked if they levees were going to hold and he said we arent done checking them over, but so far so good. FWIW
