I graduated from Block. And I'm surprised bunge is that confident. That area has flooded before.

so my question is .. why are we hearing nothing about this in the media for the most part ? just the maps i am looking at from the 1927 flood tell me this is going to be devastating for a lot of people ..

Because they have no one to blame, and it has yet to happen. After it happens they will have pictures and will blame someoen.

My guess is, nothing it really happening yet. Wait for the crest to get closer.

I found that map earlier, the one that showed the flooded areas from 1927, and thought..."Oh, frick."
The weather channel briefly touches on it...but they aren't fired up yet. Which is odd. They are usually over-dramatic (ie: hurricanes).

The levees did not exist or were not worth a damn back then.
I asked the same question as you last night and was basically told the media will get excited when the flooding starts.

Pretty good explanation of all the spillways and control structures. Hadnt seen this posted yet

In the aftermath of the huge floods that would cause the main flow of the river to jump to the Atchafalaya River.....The Atchafalaya would be a rushing, raging river, even during the fall for a period of time until it scoured the channel and filled in the lower reaches so that the flow would diminish.
Would have whitewater rafting in Louisiana for a few months.
But in all seriousness. Good link

This is the thing. The design of today's entire levee system is based on what happened in 1927. So, nobody knows exactly what the flooding might look like this time around because it may be the first real test of the system.

Hope they last better then the one in New Orleans.

I wouldnt say the first real test. 73 was a pretty good test and it almost ended badly for the control structure back then.

My girlfriend and her family have a camp in Monterey on Black River Lake. Should they be concerned?

So a little bit of a side track but can someone tell exactly why the river wants to jump? Is it bc the ATC is a shorter and more direct route?
From timbo's link a few pages back:
quote:
ORCS to Gulf via Atchafalaya: 142 mi
ORCS to Gulf via Mississippi: 335 mi

It seems the older people are getting the hell out of dodge.

Yes, they should.

It would be a good idea to listen to them. My parents talked about 27 and to a lesser extent the flood of 45
