In 2008, a flood caused portions of the levee at the spillway to deteriorate and sent floodwaters into cropland located within the floodway. [4] It is because of this damage to the to the levées around the spillway and the extent to which the structure itself was undermined by just the '73 test that the Morganza Spillway has never been opened since, though it would have been useful during several subsequent years to relieve pressure on the Old River Control Structure. Studies by the Army Corps of Engineers after the test determined that once opened, it would likely never close again, and could be ripped from its footings, allowing the Mississippi River to jump its banks and flow primarily through the Atchafalaya Basin.

.they built this huge levee around their yard on the river, its quite amazing
But the levee they built only got them to +11 I believe, so if the river gets to the expected 12 to 13 feet it's still coming over. This is coming from a reputable source as of yesterday.

Where did that email come from? That should scare the hell out of everyone that reads it if its reputable. Damn! The state would never be the same.

I think this is the real reason that it is taking so long for an opening announcement. None of the higher ups want to make the call and let it flow. It has the ability to save our two largest economic and population centers but at the same time an even bigger catastrophe could be created.

Could be true, but it seems a bit conspiracy theory-ish. Granted, they wouldnt want to let something like that out. However, after doing some of my own research I could only find the line on one website: RumorMillNews. So that kinda brought me down from a 9 to a 4

Crossed Morganza structure twenty minutes ago. Saw a Blackhawk patrolling the area. Corps is shoring up southern inflow channel levee w Hesco baskets. Water looks to be only five to eight feet from top. The gate lifting equipment looked to be in tip top shape. I went over to the Innis side to take pictures, and some burly Dudes in red shirts in a US Government truck shadowed me. I was not feeling the love.

The above posting originated at god like productions. This is a conspiracy theorist website that continues to promote that 911 was an inside job and that the govt is still hiding aliens

Took a picture of it from the Berwick side yesterday. I heard it only goes to 12' though.

More water... On a serious note, can you imagine if we had been pounded by rains the last few weeks??

If either the Morganza Spillway or the Old River Control Structure were to fail, the consequences for Louisiana, the region, the nation, and international commerce would be immense. In this event, the main channel of the lower Mississippi River would likely change permanently to the Old River and Atchafalya River channels in the Atchafalaya Basin, thus bypassing Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Existing port facilities may have to be relocated or replaced, as would Morgan City and many smaller communities. Transportation by road, rail, sea, and barge would all be dramatically affected. Sedimentation and erosion patterns would change, including development of a new river channel and delta, as well as a new pattern of floodplains. Changes to salinity of coastal waters (less saline near new delta, more saline near present delta) would affect marine life, fisheries, beaches, and coastal marshes, as well as submerged infrastructure.
Why is this on the Morganza Spillway wikipedia page?
First of all the Mississippi isn't going to shift through Morganza. It could at the ORCS someday but I don't see why that should be posted on the Morganza Spillway page.

Everyone is worried about the 70/30 split at ORCS, but they seem to fail to realize that going over 30% at ORCS is only possible up to capacity, and if capacity is 620K cfs, then any flow rates over 2,066,666 cfs will actually cause the ORCS to be operated BELOW 30%. At 2,345,000, it would be operated at 26.4%/73.6% Atchafalaya to Mississippi.
+1
We have been making alot of measurements on the big rivers.
We made a discharge measurement on the Atch at Simmesport and the ORCS outflow channel yesterday.
ORCS outflow channel was 515kcfs
Atch at Simmesport was 557kcfs
Just got back from the Bonnet Carre Spillway we measured 102kcfs on the Hwy 61 bridge.
We made measurements at Wax Lake and Atch at MC today but I do not have those numbers yet.

loo, that is depressing me.

Latest local conspiracy theory: the Corps will wait until the water tops the locks at Morganza before they open it so they can say that it was flooding anyway (locks top at 61 feet, expect 62 feet plus at crest - roadway is supposedly at 64 feet) because of political backlash expected from opening. Sounds sort of dumb, but politics and dumb decisions seem to go together. Can you imagine the outrage if the wait to open it causes a levee to give way at a critical spot, like south Baton Rouge? I personally think that the corps is married to their formula about X amount of flow before they can open it. I think the decision to open has been made, the only issue now is when to do it.

They are going to wait as long as they can to open the damn spillway, less water down the spillway means less heartache for the people in its path......they dont want to open it any sooner than they have to.
