The water level is just one hurdle..In July and August come the next. Based on nitrate readings so far in the river, which are high, its going to a be record hypoxia event.

OK so quick question? I ask now if environmental engineering will be an okay major to be in???? That's my son's major and there's no changing his mind and I'm good with that. He's wondering if this is helping his job outlook. Sad I know.

Corps will wait until the water tops the locks at Morganza before they open it so they can say that it was flooding anyway (locks top at 61 feet, expect 62 feet plus at crest
Governor Jindal said the trigger point for opening Morganza Spillway is when the flow at Red River Landing reaches 1.5 million cubic feet per second.

Latest graph from NWS shows the river was at 60.24 feet at 5:00 PM CDT and the flow was 1.44 milion cubic feet per second. The flow had increased 40,000 cubic feet per second in a 24-hour period.

The current forecast is the Mississippi will reach 1.5 cubic feet per second at Red River Landing about midday on Friday with the river at 61.7 feet.

That is unreal. I am not sure we really know what is actually headed our way. Add a few inches of rain from the front moving through Texas and Arky tonight and this has me worried.

ABSOLUTELY!! In about a decade Louisiana will have billions to spends on coastal restoration projects. Part of that will be engineering large diversions, thinking outside of conventional wisdom, and barrier island restoration.

To 1440 kcfs from 1370 kcfs between 2300 UTC today and 2300 UTC yesterday is how I am reading that. That is 70 kcfs in the last 24 hours. What am I missing?

Now that is worrisome. If they do not have Morganza at least partially open by then, they have let too much water slip by.

ABC News ran a report a few days ago that showed Corps of Engineers employees surveying the levees in Memphis to see how well they were holding up.

The USACE employees were wearing red shirts.

Good catch

The difference I was looking at was actually a 40K cfps increase between 1600 on 10 May and 1600 on 11 May.

Bad typo and even worse proofreading.

No sweat. Scared me half to death to think that it had increased 440 in a day!

Probably not,

But if they were wearing red shirts with white lettering and driving a US government vehicle, my bet is they are USACE.

okay got a few pics from the ORCS. They didn't want people to stop around the ganza spillway, so we drove past it.

these are all from the older structure:

water level and incoming water (MS side)

heres the backside (Atchafalaya). It was absolutely rolling here. Also, the air was pretty cold too:

right past the outflow. it was making some strong waves:

in case you were wondering how it was able to carve out all that area under the structure the last time:

i think one of the guys working there said the opening goes ~70' below in the center two openings (dont remember the actual term) and ~65' for the side ones (which i dont think are open)

i'm not sure how well this will work but heres a little video of the "rapids" shooting out the backside:
splish splash

also, I have a question: I don't think theyve closed off the levee in BR yet, so tomorrow I'm thinking I'll go out there after my final and drop a pole in the water. I have a fishing license so that shouldnt be a problem, but if I were to bring some alcoholic beverages out there, how likely is it that the levee patrols won't be too pleased?

LsShoe:

I noticed the same thing. It was ten degrees cooler next to the Rivers (Mississippi or Atchafalaya).

The pic below was taken today. Several people on the levee today checking out the water level and several fishing as well.

Walked on the levee at LSU today. The water looks like it needs to come up another 10-14 feet in most places to topple the levy. I'm pretty sure BR is safe unless there's a breach, but I just don't see any spill over.

How many gates were opened at Morganza in 1973? In particular:

How many (of 125 gates) were opened initially (in the first several days)?

Maximum number of gates opened & for how long?

How many gates were open when both sides of the Morganza Locks' water levels were about the same?

That is, how many gates were open as the River finally started to subside?
