How do you handle auction drafts? Let everyone use their money and wait to start buying players midway through for much cheaper or spend most of your money upfront on 3 top tier players and then just get what you can get after that?

I've been in a 16 team auction league for years, and here's what I've learned.

Group your players in tiers, and try to get one of the first ones in that tier. Never wait on the last player in that group, those usually get into a bidding war.

Put a personal floor and ceiling on players you want, and do your best to stay in those prices (it's not easy).

You're going to have to pay a premium for "sleeper" players that you can wait for in drafts.

Average, run of the mill players that always put up reliable stats are not popular in auctions.

If you plan on doing this again next year, write down every player and their auction price. It gives you a great idea for price ranges in future auctions.

Tested this theory out yesterday~

For the first big name RB that pops up (Lacey, Lynch, Bell, Charles, Peterson), and if you like him, bid. He'll usually be the cheapest of the five. I was able to mock buy Lynch and Bell for $53 and $65 respectively. Basically $60 for each. I usually then wait for a long time until TY, Matthews, those guys pop up. And in the meantime put up hype players to get people "on my level" money-wise.

Do not wait for players because when the last of an elite tier player is left you'll get into a bidding war and over spend. Get a core of 3-4 studs and don't worry too much about your bench. That's what the waiver wire is for. Don't spend much on a QB outside of Luck and Rodgers.

Bargain shopping in the middle of the draft will have you left with extra money at the end. And if you like 3rd or 4th place than it's the best strategy

Don't be afraid to spend good money on players you are really high on this year. Only spend $1 on a K and $1 on a DEF. I like to start auctions by nominating top K/DEF. If someone is willing to bid more than a $1, be my guest. If I happen to land a top K/DEF early on in the draft for a buck, great!

Biggest tip: spend ALL of your money but don't be left with just $1 per open position at the end. You want to be able to steal a player or two at the end for $2-3.

Being in Saints/LSU country, I always put Saints and former Tigers up for bid in first few rounds because I know people will overspend on them.

Jeremy Hill will cost you first round money. He may be worth it if Hugh Jackson plans to run him like he did to end last season

If I can land (AP/Bell/Charles) with Julio, Dez and Lamar Miller as my core 4 I'd be quite happy with picking one more flex and the rest $1-2 players. The core of your team matters most in auction drafts. A well balanced team may get you to the playoffs, but hitting on studs will get your 1st place through thr regular season

I agree with tzimm. Stars are what wins fantasy, not your bench or role players, no matter how cheap you got them. Especially this early in the season you can churn the ww to add depth. Assuming a 200 budget, Get 3-4 studs for around 150, then be patient until the end and fill out the roster with lottery tickets like Amari cooper, Cruz, etc.
