I was over at my dad's place yesterday, helping out with some chores. He lives way out in the sticks here in the Philippines. Times are tough, so folks are sipping on ocean water instead of something colder. After we wrapped up, we wandered over to a local shack by the beach, a spot where fishermen, tricycle drivers, and those who toil under the hot sun come to find a bit of peace.

On the tiny TV was JD Vance, and the local sari-sari store owner turns to his old buddy, the jeepney mechanic, and says, "You know, pare? He ain't so bad, ha. The economy's getting back on its feet, nobody's stirring up trouble, and we're getting a bit of respect out there in the wide world. Never thought I'd say this, but that Ohio JD's got my vote this time.

I glanced around and saw a lot of tired nods in agreement. There were a few weak calls of "Oo nga" and "Tama ka diyan" from the folks nearby.
Even the lone farmer in his straw hat at the corner lifted his cup of ocean water with a nod, taking a sip before immediately regretting it.
