Re taxation, the author argues that the tax effect is too small to be one of the selling points.

Well, Colorado expects 140 million this year. California may add a billion in tax revenue. It may be small in Maine, but so is their population and total tax revenue.

In Colorado, the places that have benefited most ate small towns bordering conservative cities like Colorado Springs and Greely. They're having those residents go to their town to buy pot, and it's revitalizing several small towns that were economically depressed.

It's a travesty that it's illegal to begin with. War on drugs is a plague

When it's not a black market item, the prices drop by at least half to two thirds. That means smokers have more money to spend, even after paying taxes.

That's nice in theory, but between regulations and taxes, it's not the case in WA or CO...legal weed isn't cheaper than previous "black market" prices.

It's a damn shame Trump didn't come out in favor of legalization.

Check out my link. He argues that that is just a temporary vagary of the current patchwork of states. Once all states/feds go legal, you can expect the price to plummet - especially if the tax is based on price and not potency.

Authoritarian strongmen don't much favor freedom.

His fat disgusting garbage friend and potential AG Christie wants to double down on prohibition and doesn't even support medical marijuana.

Not in LA. Not as long as there are people like Newell Normand screaming and cursing in front of the state legislature, and using antiquated arguments that are taken as fact just because he is a sheriff.

I could not care less about pot (legal or not).

But it's great to see states making decisions for themselves.

It absolutely is in Colorado. Ounces didn't sell for less than $100 4 years ago. I've bought $75 ounces during specials.

I can't speak for WA.

I know of one black market grower in Colorado, and his weed is more expensive than almost any dispensary in Denver. But it's also the best weed I've ever seen. And that's not because of my lack of experience. So it's more of a niche connoisseur market.

Most illegally grown pot in Colorado it's grown to specifically export out of state. The government has been going after those people.

A black market is still a "market." So, tax and regulate the same product and make it 1/3 the price...I'll come back and apologize when I'm wrong.

that means you have LESS money to spend on other goods,

you are assuming everyone spends 100% of their income.

HOPEFULLY this is not the case (although I know for some it is). Also, there are hundreds of thousands of people who are already purchasing pot in addition to everything else they already buy.

This is legit argument. I'm not sure how I feel about it, considering I like high potency pot. But I think lower potency should be marketed towards occasional smokers. If you smoke once a month, you don't need or should buy 25% thc pot. I know smart users that won't even smoke my weed, because they know it will get them too high.

For irregular users, I think 1:1 thc:cbd strains should be pushed. It'll get them high, and the cbd had a very relaxing effect. It's perfect for most people.

Don't have much interest in smoking it myself but I voted to legalize it.

That was me, plus a little savings. I'm glad I won't have to buy pot for another year or longer.
