You think this will get them to stop asking? Based on the number of new posts asking the same exact question, most of the ones suggesting the trade don’t read the board. They just come here and start a thread with their “original thoughts”

I'm sure there would be a roundabout way of doing it if someone really wanted to, but I find the odds of that to be very low.

The Saints do anything slightly roundabout, they forfeit at least two first round picks.

This board is littered with guys who continue to post LSU should move the Grambling game to week 0 despite being directly told that they don't meet the qualifications for that to happen.

They won't stop posting stupid stuff about Payton until he is coaching elsewhere, if then.

But I appreciate your efforts.

Can you help a brother out? Early in the process, there was a lot posted on here stating that Payton couldn't just wait out his contract and then sign with another team, Saints getting no compensation. It was said that even if he came back in 2-3 years, Saints still owned him for remainder of contract.

Now I see a lot of people posting the opposite. He can wait it out and Saints get nothing.

Would you mind clearing that up as well, as seems like a lot of disinformation gets posted here?

I cant really find it anywhere but from what I understand.

Player contracts cant lapse. For example, if Calvin Johnson were to return he would still be part of the lions. They have to play in order to get to free agency.

Doesnt work that way with staff. Payton can wait his contract out if he wants. But there is very little chance of that happening

It is a grey area.

Teams have argued in the past that the contract is essentially on hold and they control rights forever if the coach wants to come back.

Every time that has been argued it was worked out and the team was compensated in some way.

Appreciate both responses. I guess there is no known answer at this point.

Can we dump Mike Thomas in the trade for some creative cap relief?

That’s what I was going to say. If Hanagriff has talked about it the past couple of days, I’m going to assume it’s possible to trade for players.

Everything is speculation at this point because no one has seen the contract. But the reality is, you cannot have 1 party to a contract (Payton) just simply stop fulfilling his obligations (coaching) under the contract without some sort of penalty/compensation. TO me, that tells me Payton either has to buy his way out, or his contract extends into perpetuity and a team has to trade for him*
