Arrived in London Monday morning via Virgin Atlantic. We had to show proof of full vaccination and negative Covid test, plus fill out the passenger locator form. Had to wear a mask on the plane. Otherwise, it was a perfectly normal flight. The only change to the service was little plastic covers on the food. You even got your pajamas. Flight had 144 passengers on a 787 so about 60% full.
Immigration was a breeze. No other flights came in, so we got through very quickly. Only question was if we were vaccinated.
London is open. Some things are limited capacity for social distancing - requiring a ticket with an entrance time. With few foreign tourists, there are no lines for anything. Walk straight into Westminster Abbey, the London Eye etc. West End shows are full up. Everyone is excited to be out and about so pubs and restaurants have good crowds of locals, yet are not crazy crowded.

I don’t get the smart arse response. This is not the poli board.
We also have to get a Covid test to fly back to the USA. Doesn’t bother me. It’s inconvenient but worth it to travel — with the added bonus of not dying from Covid.
The point was that restaurants, museums, pubs and theaters are open. Masks are requested but not required. People are going about their business. If you don’t mind the minor inconvenience of getting the paperwork and Covid test done, you can travel across the pond and have a great time.
Or you can go to Destin. Doesn’t bother me. I like the shorter queues in London.

The day 2 test is still a thing. We signed up through our hotel with a company called Halo. They delivered self test kits to the hotel. No q-tip up the nose. You spit in a test tube, seal it, scan a barcode into an app, and drop off at the front desk. 24 hours later you get your results. We are using this for our predeparture test as well.

I don’t get it either. Traveling has been great during Covid for us. It significantly reduces the people traveling. Beach resorts were 25% full in Aruba when we went last year.
Do your homework before hand on the rules and make your decision if it’s worth it. I do hate the mask mandates on planes. Mainly bc it’s incredibly dumb.
But I can deal with that to have empty rows on flights, free upgrades at hotels, less people EVERYWHERE.
Enjoy yourself trip. I’d like to get back to London soon. I did all the touristy stuff. I want to explore more

If a beer fan, venture to the Wenlock Arms Pub. Out in a neighborhood and known for excellent beer selection. You may be the only tourists there, so it’s great for people watching and eavesdropping on locals bullshitting.

Do a tour/food tour in Soho. It ended up being one of our favorite spots with all its quirky little things you miss without knowing to look for them.

I’d originally planned to take the Eurostar to Amsterdam for the last two days and fly out of Schipol. The new EU restrictions put on due to our increased Covid rates screwed that up. We stayed in London instead.
I booked the flight 9 months ago and got a great deal $2,500 round trip in business. To change the flight, Delta’s new fare is $7,000. I bought a separate one way ticket on KLM which gives me about 3 hours in AMS before our Delta flight. Supposedly they can check bags all the way to our final destination from Heathrow.

Looking to go around Christmas. Hopefully the rules don’t change between now and then. Did you have to get a specific test before departing the US? Or can you get a regular PCR from say CVS, Walgreens etc and just show the negative result?

You have to do 4 things to board the plane to the UK:
1. Show proof of vaccination.
2. Negative PCR test taken 3 days before departure (which can be your CVS test). Paper or electronic (on your phone) is fine.
3. Schedule a day 2 test in the UK.
4. Within 24 hours of departure, you must complete the UK passenger locator form for each passenger- which requires entering the confirmation code from your day 2 test.
To return to the US:
1. Show negative PCR test taken 3 days prior to departure.
2. Complete passenger verification form. This is simple. Check a box and sign your name. They have the forms at the gate or you cDNA prefill on your phone.
