Not all of it but a big part is too many companies have gone down the path of Toyota just in time supply chains. It is taught like a religion in every business school. The problem is Toyota are not slavish to the principles and learned when and where to modify it most other companies haven't but they may now. Unneeded inventory is indeed bad, all inventory is not bad you have to identify each and act appropriately.
