Which freshman wideout do you think will make an early impact?

My money is on Deion Smith and Jack Bech.

Deion is listed as 6’3 203lb & Jack coming in at 6’2 215lb solid. Those two look to be physically ready for college ball. Also, in watching their films, they both are very good blockers. There’s nothing better than a wideout who plays physical and 100% even when he knows he’s not getting the ball. Another great quality is they track the ball and the ability to elevate over defenders for contested catches. Those traits should lead to early PT.

I think those are the 2 most likely. Smith is a great athlete for his size and Bech is deceptively fast and a real student of the game.

Plus Bech has a high motor and brings his lunch pail to work everyday. Sheesh...

He definitely could make an impact, I love his route running, speed and leaping ability but I think he’ll need to bulk up some, but I could be completely wrong. Just opinion. Any one of these guys could shine as a true freshman.

Order of ‘21 impact: Deion Smith, Bech (if Gilbert doesn’t play in ‘21), Nabers, Hilton, Thomas.

Smith definitely has a leg up by being here in the spring. After that, it’s anyone’s guess. Bech has a unique skill set and is probably physical enough to play right away. I’d bet it takes Nabers some time to get ready after he sat out last year. Thomas and Hilton need some time in the weight room before they’re ready for regular PT.

Deion was rehabbing most of the spring and didn’t practice until the week of the scrimmage. I was surprised he got to play to be honest. He did have some good moments in his week of practice though

“deceptively fast”? Just say he’s white and get it over with.

Brian Thomas is physically ready to contribute and has the height that we need in red zone situations. He is my pick, although I have to admit, I'm anxious to see Jack Bech in action. His highlight film is impressive.

What does that even mean, besides “He’s white”?

The obvious choice is Deion Smith since he’s been here the longest. I hope Bech plays as a freshman but wether he plays or not probably comes down to the Arik Gilbert situation. In the small chance he comes back and gets eligible to play then Bech would not see the field much. If Kole Taylor is the starter then I think we see Bech a little bit but I think Nick Storz will be Taylor’s immediate backup.

That would be my choice as well per that very reason. But, the fun aspect of all this is somebody can always step up and surprise.
