Car gurus: “Newly used” purchase

I’m looking to game the system as best as I can so I appreciate the help on this.
I was looking at reserving one of the new Ford Broncos, but I’ve never purchased brand new. I’m curious what the general consensus is on buying a new, but used (under 15k miles) car versus first owner. Are there enough savings to be patient on that? Say, brand new the ticket price comes out to $35-40k.
To make matters more complicated I’ve got to switch into something that I can drive for the next year or so while I wait. I don’t think leases offer 12-month contracts so I may just find something relatively inexpensive and put down what I think it will depreciate to by the time I sell it. Thoughts on this as well?

If you are looking for a Ford Bronco, then your only option is new unless you go back to the old Broncos. So to "game this system" if you will, would be to choose a different car.
Each and every car depreciate a little bit differently so once you pick a car, you can then research a "sweet spot" on mileage, year, pricing, options, accidents, etc that define your definition of a great deal. Everyone has a preference on that.
But again, if you want a Bronco, that's a new car you are about to buy and good luck getting a discount on that one.

For the record I was planning to find one that someone sold back to a dealership after a short period of time.
So after release date, I’d hunt 3-6 months out. But if the potential savings are not worth it then I may just pull the trigger.
Still leaves me with the issues of finding the most reasonable way to get a car from now until then. I don’t mind just buying a higher mileage Jeep or something to that effect for 12mos or so.

That car will be in such high demand. You won’t be getting any deals.

research the prices of the new corvette and see if there are any savings. I don't think there are, but that might have a lot to do with plants shutting down right when they were coming out and there not being the expected inventory of new ones.

They won't be. Those likely will have high demand, plus you'll be missing out on some of your warranty, plus not get new car financing rates.

Rental car companies are unloading vehicles right now.

Find a good clean Camry. Make your best deal. Drive it until you get your Bronco, which at this point will be longer than 1 year.
Sell or trade your Camry. Of course when you trade you won't get full retail on the Camry.

You can take over the balance of someone else's lease in the interim.
If Broncos are anything like new Corvettes, getting on the list is the only way to get one. New Corvettes are being resold by owners who reserved them for $15,000+ over cost immediately.
I'm not insinuating a Bronco is anywhere near a Corvette, but waiting for someone to trade a Bronco to a dealer in 6 months for you to buy is not a good strategy. Dealers make far more money on used cars than new cars. If you want it new, order it and pay the sticker price, otherwise you're just being a cheap arse and you wouldn't really save any money. Buying a barely used truck rarely makes sense with the way manufacturers subsidize new ones.
It's an American car anyway, they'll be flooding the market every year with huge discounts and extended 0% financing, a 3 year old Bronco will be lucky to be worth 40% of its initial cost in 3 years anyway. If you're too cheap to buy new, wait 3 years.

I just bought a 2019 with 15,000 miles for about $10,000 less than a new 2020 with same equip. My old man would say spend the extra and get the new one, but I had my dollar limit and the 2019 was new enough for me... I upgraded from a 2007.

You're welcome, let us know what you go with, on the lease and post pics of the Bronco!

You'd best just find another car to lease for a few years because you most likely won't find a discounted, slightly used Bronco for at least two more years.

Just put the reservation in. I’ll see it in 2021 if I’m lucky.

Buy a high mileage, good condition car for around $4k. Then wait and buy a Bronco from a rental company when they sell them off with less than 30k miles in 2 years. Substantial savings to the consumer.

I bought a lightly used Jeep Wrangler that was a rental for about 1.5 years (23k mi).
I got an excellent deal going used and saved about 12-13k off the new price.
I was nervous about the rental deal, but more research made me more comfortable.
