I see these 2 herbicides mentioned the most on here. I already own MSM and was wondering if having Celsius on hand is needed. It's not cheap obviously, so what would I gain with having Celsius that MSM doesn't already kill?

There are are some problematic weeds like Doveweed and green kyllinga, carpetweed as well, that Celsius will control that MSM won’t, no doubt others. I started out with MSM, still use it, but bought Celsius largely to control Doveweed but use it for other weeds as well, but I didn’t buy it until I needed it to control weeds that MSM Turf would not control.

The upfront price is high, but a bottle will last as long as 5 years - this is year 3 on my bottle and I’ve use a little more than half. I think it is about $105 at Site One in BR. So in my mind the cost is $20 per year - a whole lot less than I pay for fertilizer, pre-emergent herbicides, etc. Of course the MSM lasts a good while as well.

Shelf life is only 3 years, ftr. Im sure it could last longer, but its expensive shite. I usually split bottles with people

According to ronk, yes they can, and in fact here is his quote on mixing the two from a thread I bookmarked from a month ago

“ For a full 4 gallon backpack it is 3.8 grams of MSM and .51 ounces of Celsius. There are 3 main weeds where the combo is better than the stand alone product: VBW, lespedeza, and spurge. It is not a combo I mix often but if I've treated something and it just keeps hanging on or sections of the weed are starting to regrow then I use the combo.”

Well according to “Do It Yourself Pest Control” you are correct - they recommend 3 years, but I’ll guess I’ll find next year as I’ll go into year 4 on my bottle. I do keep mine inside under controlled conditions to help preserve shelf life. Even using 3 years, $35 per year cost is still an effective cost for a top of the line selective herbicide.

Splitting bottles with others is also a good idea.

That is correct. I started mixing these together back when I lived in Baton Rouge. Dr Ron Strahan suggested I use it when I was trying to get rid of lespedeza and it just wouldn't go away.

The 3 years thing with Celsius is really because Bayer had to put something on the bottle. It should last longer than that.

Celsius doesn’t seem to be doing well on my lespedeza. It smokes my VBW, whereas I had poor performance from MSM.

Try Celsius and MSM combined on lespedeza.

Will MSM take care of Nutsedge? I know Sedgehammer will but I have some (a lot) mixed with new Bermuda growth. The MSM is supposedly safer for the new growth and I already have it.

It won’t. I add sedgehammer to MSM

I would replace both of them with fahrenheit and Certainty. These two should get rid of almost every weed besides dallisgrass

With this combo you're talking about, do you simply spot treat or is it a broadcast spray over entire lawn?

Bump for this answer. Anyone?

And can anyone recommend a 4 gallon backpack sprayer? Any one better than others?

Had a pro series (not sure of maker) which was awesome for years before it started leaking , you could adjust spray easily . Bought a Solo sprayer ..... sucks arse. Have to get separate tips to adjust spray ..... doesn’t pump well
