Has a parties presidential candidate ever died during a campaign?

I don't know of a case but there have been many elections in history. I don't consider it likely that Joe's body will giving out before his mind, but if he goes even more mentally vegetative, it will functionally be as though he had died. Does Pelosi and Schumer just pick a new candidate at a convention? When is the last day to legally declare for office?

With Covid-19 there is a better than average chance that one or both candidates could die this election season.

Or while in office.

Yep, Horace Greeley died between the election and the electoral college meeting.

Can you imagine the bag of meds Joe Biden's wife dumps out on Biden's doctors desk?

FDR was almost dead when he was re-elected in November 1944.

This board had Hillary pegged as dead of some illness long before the election.

There is zero chance of this happening.

There is an early '70s novel called Dark Horse by Fletcher Knebel based on this premise
Nominee dies a few weeks before election, minor politician takes his place and is thrown to the wolves

I still believe that Bill came close to getting knocked off in 2016. Hillary had to have been tempted to go for the sympathy "Bill is Dead" bump vote. I think she would have done it but, unlike Trump, she foolishly surrounded herself with 'advisers' who told her what she wanted to hear, so she thought she had already won.

Yes, I have seen Biden die many times on TV. No one had the decency to bury him.
