So looks like we are going to have to put down our Dobey. Which sucks because he is not terribly old and is in excellent shape for his age, 9.5, and still has a puppy mentality. Also has been excellent with our young son, can honestly say he has been the best dog I have ever owned.

Thinking of getting an Airedale due to the fact they don't shed however I am worried about how he would behave with small children.

A good friend has one, it sheds. Not like lab shed, but it still does to an extent. As far as with small kids, his is 7 months old and 85lbs but still thinks he’s 10 pounds. He’s been known to trample small kids, but he means no harm.

We had one years ago. Big rascal that was the largest size class of the breed. He didn’t shed and was good natured, once he knew you.

Good dog.

Get another Dobe. /thread

Sorry about putting him down. I raised 5 of them and that part sucked.

All of my Dobes were just excellent with my daughter. The first one was a year old when we brought her home from the hospital. That baby was HIS from the beginning. Followed her everywhere and let her crawl all over him.

I can 2nd this right here. Ours has been great with our son, driven like crazy to hunt, intelligent, and no shedding.

I don't think you can beat a doberman as a family dog. The short life span sucks though. I had to have mine put down a few weeks ago.

I've never had an Airedale. But, most of the terriers tend to be a bit "driven", to say the least. Perhaps they're not as spazzy as some of the smaller terriers.

Mine was great around kids. My son learned to climb the steps to the 2nd floor by holding on to the dog. He hated coyotes though!

My 2 cents is not any terrier especially with kids. We did the whole search and decided on an Irish Terrier he's 37 pounds and worships kids. Overall the best temperament and not crazy hyper. Supposed to be non shedding but he does shed some. Hard puppies to find, first time on beach ever we ran into 2 other couples....The airdates are great also have a friend with some. We went from 30 years of labs to this terrier. No looking back he's analytical.

Our search came down to Welsh vs. Irish. We went with Welsh based upon some things I read about the Irish, and we had zero personal experience with either.

If you want a dog that is imposing to intruders and great with kids the Great Dane is something to consider. Their shedding is seasonal and not bad at all. Nothing even close to my labs I have owned over the years. They are one the best behaved dogs in the house as well. My current Dane is 9 and is still as healthy and agile as ever. I see no reason for him not to live 3 to 5 more years. His parents both lived midway into their teens. If you do consider one buy with caution. Stay in the fawn, blue, black colorbreeding and dont buy if the pups are advertised be or have have "Euro" in their breeding. The "Euro's" and crazy color breeding drop the average life span for danes considerably. Well bred American style danes live much longer and are healthier than what is normally advertised for the breed. 11-14 years is very realistic.

I have only met one Airdale. Beautiful dog. He wasn't let off his leash to play with the kids so I have no clue how he would have responded to them.
