what are the best books to read, if you have never read any of the star wars books

The new canon stuff is really good. I’m in the middle of the third Thrawn book, and I’m enjoying the hell out of it. I definitely recommend them. I’ve also read Master and Apprentice, which is about Obi Wan and Qui-Gon Jinns relationship pre Phantom Mencace. I’m also gonna start Tarkin after I finish Thrawn.
I don’t recommend reading any of the legends stuff if you haven’t read any of them before. It’ll just confuse you even more.

I was hearing the thrown trilogy was a good place to start. Interesting about the Master and Apprentice, I was watching the phantom menace last night. I have read the star wars trilogy book and I thoroughly enjoyed that one

The Thrawn Trilogy is outstanding.
When I was evacuated for Katrina, I read the New Jedi Order books, which covers the Yuuzhan Vong War, which I enjoyed immensely.
Neither of these series are considered canon anymore, since Disney decided to wipe them out. Which is a shame.

I would definitely recommend the Thrawn Trilogy to start. They also have an Audio book about Dooku. It's called Dooku: Jedi lost, and is read by individual actors. Really good listen.

Battlefield: Twilight Company; Tarkin; Sutherland Lords we’re all good.
Heir to the Jedi was okay.
Asoka, however you spell it, was boring.
From a certain POV is a mixed bag. Some great short stories and some awful.

I can remember reading the original book months before the movie came out. Written by Alan Dean Foster. And I thought "Holy crap is this movie going to suck".

Depends on if you want to read the old EU (dubbed legends by Disney) or the new EU
As far as old EU, Zahn really kicked it off with the Thrawn trilogy, establishing major EU characters like Mara Jade, Thrawn, and the Jedi twins, so Heir to the Empire is a good place to start and all 3 of the Thrawn books are good. That said, you don't have to read everything in order
Brian Daleys Han Solo stories are pretty good, albeit slightly off since they're pre empire strikes back and the Empire is not in them much
Splinter of the minds eye is the first actual EU book, as it was written as a backup plan for a low budget sequel if the original star wars didn't do well. But then ANH blew up and ESB got made and the rest is history. It still kinda fits as a story between 4 and 5
Really, start in a period that interests you the most, be it prequels, OT, old republic or Disney,
On a side note, Plagueis is darker than most star wars books but it is a good account of palpatenes rise to power
I can not attest to the quality of Disney's books as I haven't read them

Darth Bane trilogy is my absolute favorite. Highly recommend those.

Depends on what "era" you are interested in.
The Aftermath trilogy covers the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. It gives you an idea of how the Republic is reformed, a slight bit about how the Resistance fits in, and how the First Order came to be.
The final book includes the Battle of Jakku and explains why the starships are crashed in the desert. It also may explain why we hear Palpatine's laugh in the new trailer.

I agree with some of the others. Just pick whether you want to get into the old EU books that aren't cannon, or whether you want to stay in the new cannon. There are a ton of background books that make the movies more meaningful. The chick from Jurassic Park that dies in the last movie is a somewhat major character in one of the books, and after reading it, her character makes more sense and her death means more.
The Thrawn Triology is really good. I'd also go back and read the original Thrawn books. Although they aren't cannon, they are really good writing.
I also really like the audiobooks for the Star Wars books, because it has music and sound effects, etc. It is a really nice change of pace from the run of the mill audiobooks.

People never talk about them, but I've read through the X-Wing series several times and love them. They follow Rogue squadron through the New Republic conquering Coruscant and after that they stay with Wedge Antilles as he starts a new squadron "Wraith squadron". I believe there are 10 or 11 books in the series, and they all lead into each other to make a very long series.

I'm ashamed that it took me a good 1-2 minutes to figure out who in the hell you were talking about. I kept trying to figure out which chick in Jurassic Park died in the last movie of the Jurassic Park series LOL.

I've read Darth Plagueis and the 3 books about Darth Bane. Dark Plagueis book is my favorite so far.

Been working through the canon books in order for a few months. I really liked Catalys: a rogue one story and dooku’s book. Was not a fan of the Tarkin book, but I had that one on audio book and didn’t like that as much, maybe if I read it I would have liked it better. I just finished Black Spire to get ready for the new movie, it was good but make sure you read Phasma first

Shadows of the Empire is a great book that takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
