Sure. If people want to do that why should the government care?
Because it often goes along with abuse, under-aged brides, and exploitation.

people should do as they please when it comes to relationships and sex as long as it doesnt involve ripping body parts off babies to kill them.
bigamy is the strangfest crime on the books today and i firmly believe its only a crime because it affects womens rights to steal all your shite in a divorce. if they have to split it with 3 or 4 other wives they cant live in luxury fricking jody on the hubbys dime

No, we do not know what came first, religious marriage or the contractual marriage
BS, its clear established fact that religious marriage came first
only after laws started allowing women to have rights, own property, and have legal standing in the courts, then and only then, did the state recognize it as a legal contractual marriage that affords you benefits and rights for things like property and children

Sort of correct, but the truth is that in marriages in the "Old World" of Europe there was not a separation between (Catholic) church and state as there is here in America today.
So, a religious marriage was essentially a contractual marriage, even more so among nobility and the well-off, with arranged marriages, dowries and the like. You could only got annulments from the Catholic church; there was no divorce. When Henry VIII couldn't get an annulment via the Catholic church, he created his own Church (the Anglican church) under which he could divorce his wife.

Of course. If gay marriage is constitutional, there is no rational basis by which polygamy can be prohibited.

Divorce should be illegal.

Honestly, I don't think government should tell people how they should or shouldn't live, however; I don't think people should use religion to persuade or force people to live a certain lifestyle.. Like what Warren Jeffs did.

The reason polygamy was outlawed is because most women will just marry the richest guys and it will concentrate the gene pool down to a few thousand men.
I'm not saying what you said doesn't matter, it's just not the original reason.

Here's something to think about, Are corporations and polygamy the same thing?

What I don't understand is.. If people decide they want to be polygamist (like fundamentalist mormons from different sects) and a guy marries multiple women, if he legally marries multiple women that is illegal right? Why get married? Why not just become a group of people living together?
