Respect for the Oklahoma Noodlers

Those guys and gals that head out to catch big catfish by sticking their arms in their mouths to pull them out of their hiding places in holes.
I was out on the Mississippi River fishing earlier today when the guy near me hooked a big channel cat about 45-50 lbs. and he was having trouble landing it with all the rocks down to the water. I climbed down the rocks and just when I got my hands on the fish, his line broke and luckily it was wrapped around my hand when I put my hand in its mouth.
Those upper and lower lips on a fish that size have a texture like 16 grit sandpaper and when it felt me grabbing it by the mouth, it put up a hell of a fight. My hand looks like I had a fight with a disc grinder---and lost.
Did get the fish on the bank and the guy was a happy camper.
Those noodlers have to get torn up by some of the fish I've seen them catch.

I get to do it in Pickwick every couple of years. I wear a glove and a long sleeve shirt and they still tear me up

not to mention those who do it regularly often have missing fingers when its a turtle in that hole instead of a catfish.

That's a giant channel cat.

Yeah, I can't imagine the pain if it's a big snapping turtle they encounter.
I've caught Cowans and even with their heads cut off to bleed them out the jaws will still bite down if something is stuck in their mouths.

ballsy move knowing there was a hook somewhere in that mouth.

Most would say "stupid".

Biggest one I've ever seen. One of my cousins caught one that was 35 lbs. on the Mississippi River a few years back and the one today made that one look small.
The guy had an ice chest the next size up from a 48 qt. and the fish was laid out with the head against one side and the tail up near the top on the other side.

Pic? You sure it wasn't a blue?? State record channel is 30lbs...
ETA: Record blue is 114lbs I think.

I checked out the pic of the state record channel cat, and I believe you're right, it was likely a blue. The cat was not as dark on the sides as the pic of the big channel cat that has the record.
I've got a flip phone and don't do pics on it and really didn't think of taking any to be frank.

They can be nearly indistinguishable based on color at larger sizes too. The most foolproof way to ID them is the anal ray (fin). The channel cat's is curved like the bottom of a channel whereas the blue cat's is flat/straight.
Regardless, a 50lb cat is an absolute hog.

If you run your hand in along the bottom you are good. Turtles cant bite down.

Got more guts than me,I’m not sticking my hand in a hole I don’t know what’s in it.

You don't happen to go with a family from New Albany, MS do you? The people who own the spot next to my in laws are from New Albany, and they are always bringing friends to noodle in Pickwick

I've got buddies here in Oklahoma that noodle every year. frick that, is all I can say. Around '95, I watched a friend pull an 87# flathead out of the Deep Fork River near Sparks. Biggest catfish I've ever seen irl. Could have quite easily fit my head inside it's mouth.
No good where I fish anyway, however. My honey holes are deep and snaggy with loads of timber. Took the most hardcore of noodling buddies I have down there with me one day fishing with rod and reel. Asked him if he thought about noodling there. He said "Thought about it, sure, but I'll pass. That's too hairy."

I had three friends who would do it from high school (I grew up in Edmond, OK). Crazy sons of bitches. Two of them have since passed away doing other crazy things.
