The wife and I are looking to buy bikes. Not planning on training for the tour de Francis just to get some enjoyable exercise. What brand, wheel size, number of gears and such would be recommended.
Also is there a good way to make use of a bike as a stationary.

First and foremost: what kind of biking do you plan on doing? City? Country?

Mainly subdivision, but excursions would be good. Might even look at a roof top carrier

Get this bike if you want to cycle outside:

Or if you want a stationary just get a peloton.

They make the S3 with disc brakes, but not the S5? I wonder why.

S3 owner with rim brakes, checking in : )

I'd suggest looking at Giant....maybe the Escape model: LINK
It's affordable but still decent quality.

if you're not ready for a bike with drop bars, then a "hybrid bike" might be your best bet. if you plan to ride dirt trails, a mountain bike would work but would be slower and heavier on the road. if you do feel ready for a bike with drop bars, look for a classic road bike. bikes direct usually has super cheap entry level bikes, look there. but before you buy, test ride these different types of bike to see what suits you.

you can buy a trainer. i think the cheapest ones (and you will get what you pay for - some are over a thousand dollars) are like 50 bucks.

Go to a good local bike shop that is a Trek dealer and they will help you choose the correct type and size of bike for your needs. You don't have to get a Trek but they are of great quality and I highly recommend them.

well a few extra grams aren't typically a concern with an aero bike. there are disc brakes on the P5X after all. and i wonder what kind of drag disc brakes and disc brake mounts create compared to the s5's rim brakes, which just flap in the breeze.

Just go to Target and pick up a couple of Schwinn bikes then.

This is the bike I suggest. It is the one I ride and race.

I have a cyclocross bike and it is great for both city riding and hitting trails.

ETA it's a Motobecane Fantom Cross Pro and I got it from Bikes Direct a few years ago. Just be careful shopping on that site, the format might give you cancer.

To echo the above poster, get a cyclocross bike. It’ll take you anywhere even light trail riding. I have onr I use for everything minus the big mountain stuff for which I have a Yeti.
