It's always been my estimation that regardless of grade/size, there were typically around 7-8 lbs/dozen, that the "lighter" crabs weighed close to the same due to having more water content, and cost was offset by the premium for #1 vs. #2, mixed, etc. I have been recently challenged on that standard, and wanted the FDB's input.

1/2 crab per pound if we're talking about the almighty dungeness.

You can get selects at Richard's for $16/crab. LT's will let them go for $12/crab. What a fricking joke this has become.

I bought blue crabs here in suburban Atlanta the other day for $2.99 a pound.

The markup due to demand in Louisiana is outrageous.

Think it probably has more to do with the decline of blue crab population and harvesting over the years. Same demand, less supply.

Not sure will ever see it return to what it was with our marshland dissappearing and other impacts.

I think a lot of the larger crabs from Louisiana are shipped to the east coast because the get better pricing. In Louisiana smaller crabs Are abundant in the summer under $50 for a hamper.

That's not that much of markup considering the fisherman are only getting $2.25# for #1's. Factory crabs, #3's are right around $1# and 2's are a $1.50.

We don't demand them as mush as they do up on the East Coast. Bushel (5 Doz.) of #1 Crabs go for over $300.

If you get there crazy early, then maybe. I want to have a $16 crab...but I don't eat dinner at 6pm.

Well, you know, there have been no hurricanes in the gulf in the last couple years but there were plenty the years before so the sand has has gotten stagnant and then of course, there was the BP thing that, and now the fuel prices are down so there are many more people out there catching all the nice crabs so the population is down but there are more being caught and the high rainfalls this past year combined with the mild winter, well, prices just are what they are.

Crab fishermen been talking to the crawfishermen lately.

And who lives on the East Coast? POLITICIANS. Yay for them. It's lovely eating #1 crabs on someone else's dime. Your Welcome from your friendly tax payer.

And if I've seen 1 crab weigh 0.8 lbs, that doesn't mean buying by the dozen is better. Why am I wrong?

Why not just get what you're paying for by buying by the pound?

You're right about the East Coast demand ... I worked for a crab buyer in Venetian Isles right off the Chef back in 94,95 ... all number ones were immediately shipped overnight to Bethesda, MD. The Chesapeake in no way meats the demand of the area.
