Are the days of "fair and honest pricing" over?

And before you say that's capitalism or some other snide typical OT response. It seems like everyone is trying to extract maximum $$$ for any product or service. As an example a buddy wanted to install some basic running boards on his rig. The shop told him it would be $600 yet the work wouldn't take more than 30 mins to 1 hour max to complete. He ended up doing it himself in a few hours. The point is it feels like everyone is out to screw everyone as hard as they can these days. Did "big tech" start this with dynamic pricing for everything like airlines, ubers, airbnb etc?

Insurance cost are to blame. If you want the best pricing just buy it from companies that don't carry insurance.

Sounds like the market sorted that one out. Your buddy made the decision that his time was worth the effort to do the job. He also learned a bit in doing it. He's a winner in this exchange.

Maximize profits. Minimize losses. If the prices are too high the market will correct itself.
Most shop labor is by the book not the actual time. That can suck for sure.

If I need a small job done I just do it myself now. Labor is insane. I just youtube it and go.

Enough other people are willing to pay those prices to have someone else do it, obviously. Weigh out your own cost/benefit analysis and proceed as you wish.
