re: Do you work the ball both ways?

I just try to keep it between the tree lines and usually add a club in case I don't catch if flush.
If I keep it in play and putt decent I score well. If not, it is one of the 12 scores that does not calculate into my 8.6 index.

I can work it both ways off the tee, and will do so at times. However, this season I've consistently played the fade off the tee, and its made me hit a lot more fairways.
"you can talk to a fade"--i think theres some truth to that statement

I try to hit one shot with my driver, but I will sometimes switch when the current one stops working. Usually not in the middle of a round and always after some frustrating range time.
I'm not bad shaping my irons so I'll hit the shape the shot calls for.

Yes. Like most I have preferred ball flight which is a draw, but I can hit everything from a 6 iron up either way on command. The more lofted clubs it’s pretty hard for me to fade it.

Yes. I like to get these three shots thrown in at least once in a round.
Even better when I have been slicing the ball all day and decide to compensate for it an pull off the best drive of the day 2 fairways over.

I normally play a slight draw, unless the shot calls for a fade. Stick with your most consistent shot, unless the shot at hand heavily favors something else.

That’s pretty much what I do. I only play a fade when there are bad consequences to hitting it left. The club I just joined has out of bounds on the left on most of the holes because it routes clockwise. I think one of the nines has a dogleg or trouble that favors a fade on 5 of the 7 par 4’s and 5’s…so it’s kinda forced me to learn how to not hit it left

Once you learn a swing that allows you to release the club head without the ball going left, it will allow you to be super aggressive when needed.

I’m still capable of some brutally bad rounds

I think a simple way of looking at it was if you have a green that’s 30 yards wide and you aim for the middle with a straight shot, you only have a 15 yard margin for error becaus you coukd hit it offline in either direction.
This is the entire game really, its a game of misses.
If you can master a shot shape and hit it consistently your scores will come down quickly.
Its a game of misses.
If you hit a cut consistently allow for it when you aim at targets.
How you play the game completely changes once you start executing shots this way.

Clubface where you want the ball to finish, body lines where you want it to start

I would assume all. Would be interesting to get a handicap gauge from this site. I feel like I’m garbage compared to most on here.
Eta: garbage is probably harsh, but not as good

I’m a 1.4 right now. But the golf courses I play don’t have a lot of water that’s really in play, fairways are pretty generous and while Old Colony which where I play most of my rounds has greens with some slope it’s just not that punishing. Even if you hit it out of the fairway the trees are sparse enough to play shots. Miss greens it’s not terribly difficult to get up and down.
Put me on a course where errant shots get punished, it would probably be 6 or so. Would still have good rounds mixed in but there would be rounds in the 80’s in there also.

Why hit a 6 iron in when I can hit a 9 iron?
Posted on 8/18/22 at 2:30 pm to Navajo61490
There likely isnt a dude on this board that should be trying to shape shots. Only a elite few are able to do so in a way that isnt worse for their golf score.

Hints why I say THE ONLY time is on 14 at BC.

I don’t know why I thought you were like a +5
But I feel ya on the courses. I play a bunch of munis which I’m sure helps me tremendously. If I lived in South Carolina or Florida where there’s water everywhere my handicap would probably at least 5 strokes higher than it is.
