12' Kayak

Thinking about picking one up while I save for my boat. I have a 6 foot bed - can I just drop my tailgate and secure it or do I need a hitch extender?

You’ll be fine laying it down without a hitch extender unless you have a toolbox that it won’t fit under. We have a truck with a toolbox that we use a hitch extender on…and one without a toolbox that the extender is not needed. We haul a 12’ and 10’.
Once you start kayak fishing- you might not even want a boat…but it makes a huge difference in the experience based on what type of kayak you get. We have good kayaks and cheap kayaks. The cheap ones suck fishing out of.

I put my 12 foot Hobie in my 5 1/2 foot bed with the tailgate down...no problem.
I did use some 4 inch pvc pipe and make a cradle for it to ride on, I extended that a bit beyond the tailgate mainly to make loading it a little easier. The cradle keeps the bottom from deforming in the heat or if you get crazy cranking down the ratchet straps.

i have a good one but rarely use it because it such a pain to pull in out etc. It’s a walden and it’s heavy

As others already said, tailgate alone is plenty for a 12' kayak.

5 foot taco bed. I put my 10 foot in the bed and a 12 on the roof rack of the camper shell.

used to haul a 14' around in my 6' bed no problems. also had a 4" pvc cradle like someone else mentioned.

What about hauling two yaks? Any good recs instead of buying a trailer to haul them ?

Put them side by side or stack them on top each other in the tailgate

I did a test drive of the 14 footer I bought and another 12 footer. The guy from Backpacker showed up to the pond with both in the back of his truck with 6' bed tailgate up. It depends on how you have them rigged out when transporting, but just hauling the hulls without attachments I'd imagine you could squeeze at least 3 in a regular 6' bed.

Sit on top or sit in? I haul my Jackson Coosa around in my bed with just a ratchet strap through the rear scupper and have never had a problem. It hangs about four feet over the dropped tailgate.

You could get a bed rack that puts them up over the cab of the truck and still allows bed space for all the gear. I've seen people roll with 2 kayaks in bed of truck also pretty often but with the amount of shite I bring along with my kayaks I really appreciate having a trailer and having the bed space for all the extras.

I use an extender on my Taco. A full size with a 6’ should be just fine.

I have a one year old 12’ Hobie outback used 4 times. Excellent shape. Will let it go for fair price. I live in BR and bought it from Back Packer.

As others have mentioned a single crossbar on the roof would work. Close the tailgate and ratchet strap to crossbar.
I also have a bed extender from harbor freight ($65) that I use if my buddies with shorter beds.
Never had a problem with the tailgate up and multiple boats stacked in the bed either.
