Say a school has signed their limit of scholarship players, can a 4 star kid still walk on there and thus not count against that scholarship limit? I’m certain a booster (through NIL) will be happy to cover the tuition costs of a 4 star athlete if there are no more scholarships left to give. Surely there are rules against this, but I just haven’t seen them yet.

Im sure they can. I'm sure this is how Bama constantly signs over the amount of players allegedly allowed. Gray shirts and other ways of cheating the system.

TBH I dont think there is a rule against this or it would have been mentioned by now. Like the rest of the NIL crap, everyone is learning as it goes and everyone just makes up the rules as it grows.

I think if teams start taking 4 and 5* walk-ons with NIL deals then finally the NCAA will step in do something.

What if teams stop giving scholarships to freshmen? What if freshmen are given a 1 year NIL deal to pay for their scholarships and other expenses and during that first year if they pan out they get a scholarship? Or, the scholarships can be given to kids in the portal? The scenarios are endless and it needs to be fixed ASAP!

Can’t wait to see 15 or 20 more 4 and 5 star guys put the Bama hat on the first week in February. They will be signing NIL contracts instead of scholarships. When they unzip their jacket, they will look like a NASCAR race car with sponsor logos everywhere.

A player counts against the limit if he was “recruited”, even if he walks on. That includes things like campus visits, in home visits, etc, but I’m not exactly sure where the line is drawn.

That’s what I was wondering….
Why do Texas Olineman need schollies if they are making 50k a year?
Hard to keep up w all this

I can see eventually players just being employees and the whole scholarship thing going away.

Ahhh this would make sense as long as the fine print is clear.

Didn’t someone say the Texas Oline would actually be making a lot more than $50k a year? That was just one deal, right?

Last spring/summer ToTo from tenn and some other high profile player walked on at bama and were on scholarship for the fall semester. Walkons can be awarded scholarships at start of season and don't count in the new recruit/transfer numbers that are limited to 25. More due to extenuating circumstances. NCAA allowing up to seven transfers over the 25 number if a school lost that many transfers. They do count towards the 85 scholarship max though.

Do what exactly? How much can they change and still have it pass muster in court?

It seems to be forgotten that letting players make money off their name and likeness (way overdue), for being the backbone of multi billion dollar industry, was a legal ruling and cannot just be scrapped.

We are about to see programs with 105 kids on the roster, all getting paid.

There is no limit to walkons. There’s an 85 scholarship limit. The avg school has 33 walkons. So there’s a lot of space there. A preferred walk-on is “recruited” but does not count against the limit.

Please give examples instead of parroting this idiotic claim as others repeatedly do. If BAMA is able to do what you claim, why can't every other program in the country?

By the way there is no such thing as a grey shirt.

But with NIL deals well exceeding tuition will it even matter at some point?

How many is bama able to sign this year? Seen they signed 27 last year. SHOULD be 23 this year, right? Or do I have it wrong?

Why do all these kids want to ride pine at Bama when they could start as a freshman at other good programs? It’s insane

Don't know. If they don't perform, then what happens?

Out of state tuition/fees alone at UT run about 40K. Then add in a bunch of other stuff plus high cost of living in Austin.
