Serious question.
Is there a point of diminishing returns with weight lifting in golf?
Tiger seems to get deep into whatever he can do. It is part of what made him great, but I think it may also have led to some of his injuries.
I don’t do any weightlifting, but I guess I should do a little strength training beyond picking up a transfusion at the turn or a 12 ounce curl now and then.
I have limits physically. Bad back. Open heart surgery earlier this year. I just don’t want to injure myself lifting more than I should.

I believe there would be a point of diminishing returns at least as far as quantity of weight. Exercising frequently with limited weight probably doesn’t have diminishing returns. I don’t think tiger is intentionally lifting to get big, to me he just seems like that’s his natural old man shape

Diminishing returns with lifting weights? Absolutely not. You should lift heavy and as often as you can. People who say lifting heavy weights are bad are fos. If you’re older and have health issues there’s other ways to build muscle and get stronger. Resistance bands, pushing sleds, etc. stronger is always better.

Now how about diminish returns in golf? Do you think there would be a point where frequency or quantity of lifting would not improve golf game?

This is just my theory with weightlifting and strenuous exercise in life. It won’t make you better at golf. Hard work and perfect practice makes you good at golf. Whether you’re a fat shite or an athlete. Imo Your ceiling is hire if you’re in good shape. No matter what you’re applying yourself to. Work, golf, hunting, etc working out and pushing yourself helps you. Higher energy levels, stamina, endorphins, all brought on by increased testosterone levels by working out and pushing yourself. So diminish returns? I see none.

There is absolutely diminishing returns on weightlifting in golf. Up to a certain point, it will help you gain strength/speed/stability. After a certain point, you are taking away from practice time and possible getting to big to swing a club effectively.

You’re confusing bodybuilding with weightlifting. Bodybuilding will cost you flexibility, agility, and harm your game.
Weightlifting with correct form and working on your mobility will help you.

Reread my post. Hard work and practice makes you good at golf. Not lifting weights. And No, it’s a myth that getting big means losing flexibility. That is why there are actual golf programs with heavy heavy weightlifting. This is the dinosaur way of thinking. Look at some of the most recent top golfers in the world. Tiger woods, Brooks Keopka, Rory, Bryson, Dustin Johnson…all doing legit weightlifting and working out.

Rory has said publicly that he wishes he had never picked up a weight. You can get too bulky for you frame a good golf swing.

Lifting weight doesn’t mean you get bulky. There’s plenty of people who lift heavy weights who are just extremely strong, slim, and flexible. Golf has become more athletic over the years. Can’t really argue any of this. Heavy weightlifting and functional strength training is done by a lot of elite golfers. It’s a legit myth that it makes you less flexible.
Chappy, not saying you’re lying but i don’t recall Rory ever saying that nor can i find an article or quote of him saying that.

MM, to your point, I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t recommend some form of resistance training regardless of your age or health conditions. Ask your doc for his advice. PT starts patients out with resistance bands and very low weight for recovering patients. I can tell you heavy lifting- in the gym or on the farm- will definitely limit your Flexibility. I lived it. But you’ll feel better and be healthier if you do resistance training. You just have to tailor it to your individual needs and goals.

I've heard him say it. Maybe it was just to me. I'll have to go back through my texts and check. It's probably in a group message.

I only meant if you get to the point when you get to be to bulky. I should have worded that better. Of course, there are ways to lift where that doesn’t happen.

Just stretch and hit balls too, stronger is better

I have heard many golf coaches/instructors say that doing it the right way and within a golf-specific regimen is very beneficial. Doing the right lifts and exercises to target the golf centric muscle groups. I've also heard others say that big muscles are tight muscles, and tight muscles are slow muscles. I think that the weight training is good for your swing but you also have to mix it with a lot of stretching and resistance training to keep your muscles elastic, therefore keeping them loose and relaxed. You have to be loose and relaxed to maximize clubhead speed.
So long story short, body building type training is probably not good, but golf muscle focused lifting with stretching and resistance training is good.
