blaming people looting on capitalism or wealth inequality is a microcosm of Cloward Piven strategy.
we did this really terrible thing repeatedly to try and strain/break the system, so try our system.
it's always a matter of the left putting their foot on the back of the scale and saying "see, I told you so."
Interesting post, and I had not heard of that before. But found this:
quote:
In his 2006 book Winning the Race, political commentator John McWhorter attributed the rise in the welfare state after the 1960s to the Cloward–Piven strategy, but wrote about it negatively, stating that the strategy "created generations of black people for whom working for a living is an abstraction".[8]
Which basically nailed it. The welfare state is what has lead to these "wealth inequities" that we see today between blacks and whites. It would also explain why African immigrants are more successful and wealthy than American-born black people...the immigrants were not raised in the "anti-work" welfare environment.

go and look at most of the things that are the big talking points by the left (and i mean modern left, not classic liberals) and think how you could have applied the Cloward-Piven Strategy to make it worse.
welfare
immigration
healthcare
costs of college
cost of gas
the entire idea is overwhelm something to point that your average voter thinks "this isn't working for me. burn it down." when the government is actually the one that made it not work for you.

I guess you don't realize that 99% of homeless are homeless because of their dependency on drugs, do you? And almost 0% of homelessness has to do with someone losing their job due to economic downturn, right? Why don't you do some research since you are a San Fran resident,
I’m well aware of the relationship between drugs and homelessness as I see it often (The link to mental health is also robust). But I specifically mentioned the increase in homelessness in recent years because it relates to an exogenous shock that led to thousands of people not being able to work in tourism, restaurants, and bars. To assume that a newly homeless person is only homeless because they are addicted to drug abuse seems flawed. Many people live paycheck to paycheck and when that paycheck stops they often don’t have financial reserves to cover those expenses.
I’ll definitely read up on what Mr. Shellenberger has to say on the topic but my commented was not related to homelessness more generally.

Every major city faced the pandemic, yet very few have seen the dramatic and negative changes SF has. There is a reason for that,

i do highly recommend Shellenberger. he's not hard right by any means, and does genuinely care.
he had a great quote on Rogan about homelessness that has stuck with me.
"i'm not opposed to a carrot and stick when it comes to the homeless, but you have to have the stick."

i believe his findings were that 90+% were mental issues or drug addiction in the homeless population. most people that are there because they lost a job were either in shelters or back on their feet fairly quickly.

I just listened to him talk about this on a barstool podcast. Interesting guy

quote:it might seem flawed but it’s pretty accurate if you real, severe mental illness. Prolonged homelessness due to economic reasons is extra rare.
