it’ll go bang (the PSA) and it’s probably a good deal lighter than the zastava or any other combloc AK. I paid 800 for my MAK90 several years ago but it’s a milled receiver with a bayonet lug. I prefer wood and steel but that PSA is likely a very well assembled rifle at a good price. You can’t even get a surplus SKS for that money right now

well there you go...norinco surplus SKS marked down 300 bucks. That’s what I would get if I wanted a 7.62x39. Milled receivers, top load at the receiver into a magazine, chrome lined barrels and you get the bayonet

An honest question to the OB. For a guy that doesn’t own an AR or AK, but would like to own one, the other, or both, is this a good place for me start on a budget?

definitely, palmetto state armory is a great place to start.

for some reason, the tan is cheaper than the black. i'm sure it's a christmas thing. but pair those together and it'll be a great headstart on one.
the AK in the OP is the "cheapest" AK they currently offer. then there's the SKS that's linked a few posts above. i still haven't pulled the trigger on either of these, yet.

I'd say no.
Start with an AR.
I started with an AK and found that it just was not a good platform for anything that I wanted to do. AK ammo is a little cheaper, but you can just go and build an AR in .308 or 7.62 later if you want.
I have both a PSA AR15 and AR47 that I want to unload if you're interested.
