Why would we?
Because we had only 3 legitimate starters for the playoffs and only 2 legitimate starters for 90 % of the World Series. At this point, you can't bank on Soroka providing meaningful innings. So unless you expect Wright and Co. to finally put together a full season, then you have to find another guy, even if it means using those guys as trade bait.

When does Albies decide to demand a contract restructuring? What his agent did to him was criminal.

For one, the game has quickly shifted away from needing dominant starting pitching, particularly in the postseason. You absolutely MUST have a shutdown pen. That's the top priority. The Braves just proved that. Our pitching absolutely dominated all postseason long, in large part thanks to the work the pen did.
Two, are you lumping guys like Tucker Davidson and Kyle Muller in with Wright & Co? If so, you are doing them an incredible disservice.
Davidson, Muller, Ynoa, & Strider are all more than capable. And yes you even have Wright & Toussiant lingering too. I'm not completly giving up on both of them.
Out of all of that talent, they absolutely can take up 2 spots in the rotation. And if Soroka does come back and can be effective, any of them could be some of the best 5th starters in baseball.
I will almost guarantee you that we don't spend a single cent on Starting Pitching. Any money we do have will go towards the OF and RP.

I'm not saying they will. I'm just saying I don't like going into a 162 game season with 3 proven starters. A 20 game playoff is one thing. 50+ starts from unproven guys worries me a bit.

His first words after Freddie caught the final out: "The Braves are world champions!"
You're right about that. He did then and other times. I guess that I'm accustomed to listen to home announcers using the term Braves and occasionally Atlanta, whereas Buck used Atlanta probably 4 out of 5 times. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy - just something I noticed.

What to do about Pache/Waters/Contreras?
Are any of these guys hot enough they can be bait for a decent return?
Contreras less-so obviously due to him being a somewhat big piece for the 2022 team.

You hate to give up on guys that are still 22 years old, but if they can bring us an impact to the roster now, you have to do it. It's easier to move Pache and/or Waters with Harris lingering behind them. And Contreras will never be the starter with Shea so a trade there seems likely. It's just a matter of when.

I would move Waters without hesitation and would have done so last year or the year before when he had more value. I think there’s a decent chance Pache is the opening day CF again. Can he last there? Who knows, but there were some very good signs the last couple months in Gwinnett and we know the defense is going to be at least 70 caliber.

Agree on Pache and have said the same thing. I think there’s a better chance than not he’s the starting CF at the start of the year. Most Braves fans just don’t want to hear that.
Ultimately, it’s impossible to determine how the OF shapes up until the Ozuna situation is figured out. That’s a lot of money on our books. And people are under estimating the money that Soler and Rosario will get. We might simply have no choice but to use Pache for monetary reasons and hope he can figure out with the bat. He’s still only 22.

I don't think we can reasonably count on Soroka;
Soroka will be fine. You guys forget that he's still only 23.

Duvall officially declines his side of the $7M mutual option. Braves owe him $3M and have until 12/2 to offer him arbitration or he will become a free agent again.

Also, in a procedural move, Braves officially activated Ozuna off the restricted list today.

Is this a normal contract situation? I don’t pay that close of attention to how the deals are structured but it seems odd that we will pay him $3M because he decided not to play for us and then potentially start negotiations for him to play for us.

No his deal with the Marlins was very unusual. You don’t often see options with buyouts attached during team control years.
Posted on 11/4/21 at 12:52 pm to volfan30
We should get info on the Joc mutual option soon. Would assume the Braves will be the ones to decline that one.

If I’m understanding it, they essentially signed him to a $8M ($5 and $3) contract thinking it was probable that they would trade him mid season and structured the contract in a way so that they wouldn’t be on the hook for $3M if the $8M if he indeed did get traded.
Seems pretty creative to me.
Still a little ticked off we didn’t just keep him last offseason.

6/$160M for Freddie does scare me.

Right. I'd almost rather a front loaded contract.
I'd be perfectly ok w/this. And that's been my thinking as well.

You almost have to try and trade Contreras, right? TDA is around for 2 more years and Langeliers is clearly the future of the position.
I also think at least one of Pache and Waters gets traded. It's basically wasting time to hold both of them down in AAA.

The Royals proved this in 2015, also.
