Yesterday I was working on my brothers truck, it’s a 2018 Silverado with the 5.3 V8… it won’t start at all.. battery gauge says it’s putting out 12.5 V but when you turn the key to start it, NOTHING.. just one click…

I pulled the starter and brought it to get tested and it came back fine.. I can hear the solenoid pushing the starter out and sucking it back in when the key is turned off so it’s getting power

I’m really not sure what else to check from here, any ideas?

Get the battery tested for real. 12.5v does not mean the battery is good.
Check connections at battery. Could have corrosion.

I assume you tried to jump with another battery as well? Just because it measures 12.5 doesn't mean its good.

Battery is less than a month old, terminals are fine.. I have a battery/alternator tester and they both checked out fine, even under a load

I tried jumping it before I did anything and nothing happened

It’s almost like it’s some sort of antitheft feature?? My brother tried his extra key and tried to reset the anti theft stuff and that didn’t work either

not a mechanic but it sounds like corrosion or connection issue to me.

I’d bet it’s something in the security logic. Use the excellent video posted by BtonTiger318 and if you bypass the starter relay and can get the engine to turn over that’s likely the problem.

My wife’s SUV wouldn’t start and I finally figured out her key needed to be reprogrammed.

This was happening to my atv and it was the ignition fuse. Changed it and it started right up. Check fuses.

Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to try to reset the security features if that may be a problem

We tried all the security shite. I just got off, if the rain holds off I’m gonna try everything that was in that video again

I bet you won't have to work on your brother's truck anymore.

Rain hasn’t got to where I’m at yet. Actually quite pleasant out right now

another thing when you say you were working on your brothers truck and then it wouldn't start, What were you doing when you were working on the truck? Would it start before you did the work? anything you could have done to make it not start?

Easy fix.

Find where the chevy emblem is on the front.

Look behind it.

It's not a tundra. That's your problem.

Turn the ignition switch on, then hot jump from the battery to the starter. Maybe that won't work on these newer trucks, but it works on my old truck. Onboard computer might not like that, but I don't know.

I’ve got an 06 with almost 300,000 on it. Last week I stopped to grab a sixer. Went to crank it, it clicked and totally died. I got jumped and drove home. Had to go get dinner and it did the same. I figured it was the battery. Jumped it the next morning and went to work. Put testers on and it showed good battery and alternator. Drove it 500 miles to my camp with no issues. It wouldn’t crank one morning. Checked battery and all good. Tried to crank again and it fired right up. Drove home no issues. The clock starts over at 12 every few times I start it. It has been running good since that one day. I’m going to check and clean connections and grounds. Any other ideas?

FIL tahoe did something similar and had it towed. The big positive connection terminal has fuses in it and they had all fried for some reason. New terminal and starts fine now
