I was watching beauty and the beast on Disney+ yesterday with my kids, and it struck me…maybe Gaston isn’t the villain. Maybe it’s Belle. Villain may be a stretch but she’s definitely no hero-princess. She’s actually a terrible person.

She enters the movie singing that classic Disney song where she talks about living in a “little town” full of “little people.” She think she’s better than them? These industrious people are just trying to survive in rural France. “There goes the baker with his tray like always” like it’s a bad thing that he’s on a bread route meeting peoples’ needs. So immediately she’s rubbed me the wrong way.

Then, she falls in love with the beast ONLY when she discovers he’s got a big library and a pretty dress. She’s all about Belle.

Hard to watch the movie after that.

The movie was intended as a subversion of classic fairy tale tropes. In any previous movie of that type, the Beast would be the villain and Gaston the hero.

Gaston might have been a douche but I feel like a strong-willed woman like Belle could have tamed him and made him a lot less full of himself. In the end, she only married the Beast for his money, library, and wardrobe.

I think you may be right. Totally selfish. Risks everything because the grass is greener on the other side. What are we teaching our kids?

She wasn’t kissing a prince at the end. She was kissing that yellow dress.

While I do genuinely like it as a live action remake, Belle comes off really snooty and better-than-thou attitude the whole time.

No difference between Gaston and beast, except beast’s possessions.
Both are assholes, with friends who sing, and both kidnap her father.
She had no indication beast was a good person because he wasn’t.

People have been asking this question of Disney princess movies for decades...

Belle making questionable decisions in service of a questionable lesson doesn't make Gaston less of an unbearable a-hole.

Don’t forget, Beast never went out of his way for Belle. He just showed her the library he already had and didn’t use, same with the dress.

At the same time, Gaston was willing to battle and potentially be killed by a giant monster just to prove his worth to Belle. His only real flaw was not being interested in her hobbies. He comes across as a self-centered guy who wants Belle’s attention and affection without having much interest in getting to understand her wants, needs, or desires. At the same time, she doesn’t exactly seem willing to help him know that or understand any of those things about him, or even the Beast, either.

Gaston would have been fine if Belle would have just married him. Their first born would have been a daughter and not 6 sons like Gaston thought, and that would have changed his outlook on life. He would have raised that daughter to be a pioneer woman that became the first female leader of France

Instead, Belle keeps women weak and powerless as she marries the man that literally fricking kidnapped her. Unreal

Me and my 3 year old daughter don’t want this shite. We watch Yellowstone and I make Beth the “princess” for her to look up to

It’s perfect because I also tell my son to pay attention to how John handles things.

Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid have one glaring thing in common that was an easy fix in the writing room. Ariel is 16 and Belle is 17. There wasn’t a single person working on these movies for over 2 years that didn’t think about at least making them legal?
