As Metro Council members begin to delve into Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s spending plan for the $73 million in American Rescue Plan dollars headed to Baton Rouge, they’re starting to ask questions.

Council member Dwight Hudson is among those who has sent an email to Broome requesting more information on some items in the budget supplement, first introduced at the Oct. 13 council meeting. Council member Rowdy Gaudet has a meeting with the mayor on the subject later today.

Among the allocations they’re asking about is a $6 million earmark for an $11 million, mixed-use affordable housing development in north Baton Rouge called Housing for Heroes.

What’s the program about?

According to the mayor’s office, the project will be a 51,000-square-foot, mixed-use development with 36, one-, two- and three-bedroom affordable units for essential workers and low- and moderate-income professionals. The development will be located in Scotlandville at the intersection of Scenic Highway and Scotland Avenue. The $6 million will be used to provide gap funding for the construction of the project.

quote:

According to the budget supplement presented to the council last week, the developer of the proposed project is KMT Holding and Development, which is owned by Bradly Brown, a Baton Rouge native and former Capitol High School football star, who played for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette a decade ago.

In the years since, Brown has become a real estate developer and investor in a variety of ventures the KMT webpage says. The site lists several projects in the firm’s portfolio, though only three, single-family residential renovations appear to have been completed. The other projects appear to be computer renderings.

There is no text with the images to explain what KMT has done with those projects or where, specifically, they are located.

Brown did not return calls seeking comment.

It is unclear how Broome selected KMT to be the developer for the project. Armstong says the idea “grew organically out of conversations with the developer.”

The developer renovated 3 homes in north Baton Rouge over the last couple of years. Now they are getting $6 million in taxpayer funding for a real estate development in the booming, stable neighborhood of Scotlandville.

Here is the developer's webpage: LINK

It gets better.

Gary Chambers defends mixed-use project in Broome spending plan

“These are the people we want investing in north Baton Rouge,” Chambers says. “They’re bonafide investors and they’re the kind of people we need in north Baton Rouge.”

I'm not sure if he means the taxpayers or the construction company that did 3 tiny home renovation projects over the past two years.

quote:

According to that plan, introduced to the Metro Council earlier this month, the project will provide affordable housing for frontline workers and low- to moderate-income professionals and will cost an estimated $11 million.

The $6 million will go towards providing gap funding for construction for the project, which will be located at the intersection of Scenic Highway and Scotland Avenue.

Gravy is defending it. That alone should raise the red flags.

The fact that one of the renderings has a scenic, mountain backdrop is proof that this is bullshite.

Black Privilege?

Oh and "gap" funding isn't usually >50% of the project value.
If you can't come up with even half of the money to fund your project, you need to move on. I worked my arse off for 20+ years to be able to afford to open my own company, and I didn't rely on FREE tax funds to do it.
Yeah, I'm mad.

They're bonafide investors that need the government to pay for their projects

That's not investing, that's carrying out a government program.

From the dudes website:

quote:

KMT Holdings and Development is a full service Real-Estate development company based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. KMT was founded with specific intent to bring superior upscale affordable housing along with economic empowerment and development to underserved and disinvested communities. Our firm believes in combating systemic disinvestment from a wholistic perspective. We thoroughly understand that Real-Estate Development lacks effectiveness when there is no equitable investment into the people which our developments seek to serve. KMT puts the people first!

It's the buzzword salad and platitudes that attract black politicians and activists like moths to a flame.

This reputable, experienced developer has a bunch of projects that don't exist in the portfolio section of their website.

But no fear. They do have a real picture of a kitchen that they presumably renovated...although no specific address was provided.

Private projects that use public money should have the same public bid and open books requirements as public projects; it doesn't matter if the contractor is white, black, brown, yellow, or a combination of all of the above. Too much public money goes in to the hands of private individuals and companies with zero public oversight.

This is a perfect example of why St. George happened. People want to know why go through the hassle? It's shite like this. Wasting taxpayer money.

Just questioning that is racist.

What Broome does with tax money is none of “you people’s” business

Broome has to kickback money somehow. She’s sitting on millions of dollars in Federal funds. Be vigilant.
