Covid is the latest excuse. Was supposed to start October 1 2021 but delayed again.

Flying with a REAL ID
REAL ID deadline extended.
Due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline. The new deadline for REAL ID enforcement is May 3, 2023. Read the announcement.
Beginning May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.

Whatever. Keep delaying this security theater that does nothing but limit the lawful air travel of citizens of the United States.

Illegals might have something to do with this.

They're really lazy pushing this mark of the beast.

Only 18 years to streamline IDs

So, it will be pushed back again this time next year.

My questions are serious and I'm not trying to be difficult - I don't know tons about the REAL ID issue other than it keeps getting delayed.
Serious question - how does this "limit the lawful air travel of citizens of the United States"?
And another serious question - what is "lawful air travel"?

Can we use this to vote?
That may be a problem for some that keep pissing and moaning about not being able to get an ID/license.
I too like fairy tales...

For real this time guys, no lie.

You have to get this special license with all the right documentation before you can board a plane in the United States.

Air travel conducted by innocent citizens, who have not been convicted in a court of law and have no duly imposed restrictions on their movements placed upon them, and who are presumed to have no unlawful intent when boarding a plane.

Just playing devil's advocate - you have to have a license to drive a car or buy a gun, and many want you to need an ID to vote...why wouldn't we expect that for air travel? I have to show an ID to get on a plane now, what's the problem with the new requirements?

I fit all of those categories today and have to show my ID to get on a plane. What's onerous about this?
I'm really legitimately asking - I don't know enough about the topic other than the date keeps getting pushed back.

Well, your mistake was in presuming I was down for these restrictions too. But, if hard pressed to defend those restrictions and not this one, I would just say that most anything that was proposed and passed after 9/11 was to restrict our rights more than to protect us.
I mean, even more than those original restrictions, this one was just security theater to calm the startled masses who were being scared up by their own government.
So...government creates fear....and passes restrictions on rights to placate that fear.

REAL ID cost more and must have more ways of proving you are you when you get one... Maybe a background check as well? I can't remember. I've been having one for a while.

The problem is its a royal pain in the arse to gather all that shite and wait at the DMV for this special service that likey does nothing but collect more money from the public at the end of the day

Sorry, was more replying to the group at large. Just wondering what makes these restrictions so crazy vs what we already do before getting on a plane. It's been so long with the current setup that I have trouble remembering what it was like to get on a plane 20 years ago.
