From his perspective, it's better to just appear to be completely apolitical. By accepting money from the Trumps, he's agreeing to politicize the entire ordeal. By rejecting the money, he's making it strictly about the incompetence of Milley and Austin.

People like him can't seem to see that's it's democrats tearing the country apart. Trump fights back and the media scream he's tearing the country apart.
