A lot of those shortcuts bog down coding, create security issues (like the brief Youtube embedding disaster), OR permit items to be uploaded that slow loading (and, I'm sure, add to bandwith the owners have to buy). Things like this and no gifs as avs/sigs are reasons why the forum loads so quickly and is so easy to read.

I used to prefer the old Shaggybevo format (Michigan State had a forum with the same one for a while). I now realize it may have been better visually, but was too slow.

I believe the rise of popularity is due to the keywording of the site. Google something and TD shows up before any other sports forum, hell most of the time it comes up before LSU run sites.
Search engine ranking has been high for this site since I can remember, 2008ish I started lurking.
