re: Retailer/server employees: worst ever customer?

i worked as a watier, cook, manager at pizza hut in the less than desirable part of town in later HS and my freshman year of college.
the amount of people that would lie, dine'n dash, or stage incidents to get free food was amazing and really dimmed my view on mankind greatly.
since it was in the ghetto, i had a bit more freedom to be ghetto back.
fun examples:
one time a dude said, "man this thin and crispy was too hard (3/4 eaten.) it was like my kidz was gnawin' on it. gnawin' on it like dogs." and wanted his money back and a new pizza.
i took a bite and said that's exactly how our thin and crispies are supposed to taste sir. he threw the box in my face and walked out.
another couple was dining in and changing their order a whole bunch, (which is really just trying to get me to mess up the order, so they can get two pizzas for the price of one.) before i put the order in i went back out there and repeated their order with somebody non-chalantly over my shoulder to listen in and they changed it again. 4 pizzas. i repeated it back and they said yes. then when we brought their pizzas, they said all four were wrong, just box those up to go for us, and remake the right ones. i said no, i repeated your order and you confirmed it. then they spilled their drinks on the floor and walked out.
i really enjoyed my co-workers and had a lot of fun working there, but it was a strong motivation to get a degree.

I don’t treat anyone bad but I damn sure go out of my way to be respectful to restaurant staff. I have on more than one occasion gotten up and left when with a god awful a-hole starts bitching at the staff over little shite. I don’t want people pissing on my food.

Other than the people who did grab and runs and would steal occasionally, one has always stuck out with me....
A softball coach came in wanting us to do a team order on helmets that were on sale. Even though this was only about five years ago we were very outdated (didn't even have a website and we were a major sporting goods chain) so we had to call all of the store to ship us the helmets via company truck and they'd arrive approximately two weeks later (truck ran one day a week). So anyways we did just that and once they all arrived we called the coach and he told his teams parents to come buy them at the store individually.
So one woman comes in and gets her helmet and returns about a week later. I'm store manager and I'm working with my assistant and she tells us she needs to order a new one. No problem. Same process - wait two weeks and it will come in. We asked if she wanted to do a return or just wait and do an exchange when the new one came in. She chose exchange when new one arrives. Here's where it gets fun - she returns to come get it a few weeks later and I'm not at work. All helmets had been picked up of course by now and she thinks she's just going to walk in and get the helmet for free. She said that she did the return already but couldn't provide a receipt. The manager working was new (maybe second or third day by himself) and calls me.
She takes the phone from him and starts cussing me out while I'm at home about how I stole her helmet and that she's going to call the police. I almost hung up in her face since I'm off but I figured that would just make it more difficult for my people there. She never gave us the helmet back (and why would I return an item without giving money or keeping the item to begin with), never provided a receipt and finally left saying she would never give us business again and that she would tell all her friends to never shop with us again. All of this over a helmet for $15. My first introduction to the Karens of the retail world. The call lasted about 30 minutes with her finally budging when I wouldn't just let her steal the helmet essentially.
TL;DR: Crazy arse woman says we kept her softball helmet even though she never returned it; tried to scam us out of a helmet that cost $15. Threatens to never shop again with us. I don't care one bit

I worked in the Lawn & Garden Dept at Walmart in HS and at the time you couldn't purchase produce at that register due to not having a scale on that register. About ever other shift we would have somebody try to buy produce out there, argue with us, and then just leave their cart full of product at the register and walk out. It gave me something to do, but it always pissed me off that you would waste all that time in the store just to be an a-hole because you couldn't get your way.

Forty year old human cigarette women who would sway up to the counter, slam down handfuls of change, and ask for Virginia slims.

Was this in BR? Because there was an old Russian couple (I think the husband was a prof at LSU) who did this ALL THE TIME at the Albertson’s on Perkins.
A friend of mine lived on the same street as them in Kenilworth and said they hated everybody and had an 8-ft fence around their property.
I saw someone do that at my local WinnDixie. The kid bagging proceeded to put each item in a separate bag. Like 6-8 limes all in different bags etc.
Was funny as shite. After the a-hole left I told the kid he should have put each egg in a separate bag too.
I work in a family owned retail business. We do a lot of sales around Christmas. We had a customer come in about 5 minutes before we were closing on Christmas Eve who "just wanted to look", so we waited and would help him when ever he had a question. After about 90 minutes he finally selects an item but wants it for half price because he "knows" we want to make the sale.
My father simply took the item from the customers hands and told him it was no longer for sale. The guy balked and still tried to cut a deal. After the third time my father had to tell him it wasnt for sale he finally agreed to pay the tagged price. This is when my father said "are you so stupid that you dont understand that this is not for sale, please leave". Then the guy gets pissed off and says he needs to buy it because everything in town is closed, my father replies "I dont have to sell this item, but you sure will need something under the tree. I hope your wife divorces you for being an a-hole. Now get out".
We laughed about that for years. It was the only time I ever recall my father acting that way to a customer. I guess he just wasnt in the mood.

I worked at a truck stop in the mechanic shop. One old white guy 60's ish and fat gets a brake chamber replaced. While hes paying for it he starts mouthing off to one of the black employees, says he doesn't like black people. Black employee follows him outside, old white guy calls him a fricking n***er. Black employee starts punching the old white guy. Black guy breaks his hand he punched him so hard.
cameras didn't see the fight and nobody snitched when the cops were called. Black guy kept his job and the white guy paid for his brake chamber and left

Malls that white people go to
and
Malls that white people use to go to

My first real job, in high school, as bagger at grocery store. My proud Mom, grocery shopper, gets in my line. In front of her is older lady who had 3 items. Something cold, chemical, and dry good. Having just gone through “rigorous bagger training” (watched a how to video), I knew to separate colds, chemicals and dry goods.
Three bags later and lady let’s me have it, in front of my Mon and all, for ruining her miserable life w/three bags for her three items.
Probably should have gone with two bags.
But I always regretted not giving the old bag 1 single pre torn bag.

Too many stories to list bc I worked retail before I worked in the public library - and the public library has its own crazy type of ‘customer’
But one of the worst things at the library is when someone returned two Rubbermaid tubs of overdue books that were full of piss
We were thinking it was cat piss, but weren’t really sure. Didn’t really want to know.

I've got nothing in comparison to most of you in this thread, but I used to be a vendor and would go to various grocery stores throughout the day/week so I'd always get bitched out for all sorts of shite that was beyond my control. My favorite one has to be where this old man proceeds to start chewing me out in the middle of Walmart over all sorts of random stuff. Milk always being expired or close to expired, they're always out of his favorite bread, etc. I stood there, leaned against my pallet of product and let him continue on, nodding my head occasionally. When he was finally finished with his tirade, I told him "Sir, I don't work here, I'm with *insert vendor name*". He looks at me as if I just kicked the Easter bunny, throws his hands up, yells out "WELL GOD DAMNIT!" and storms off.

I was working at a restaurant and this guy came in saying we fricked up his order. But I had never seen him before so I just denied it because I knew he was full of shite. Saw him walk across the street to a diff restaurant and come out with a bag of food.
People do this until they get something for free.
The rest of us are suckers.
