quote:Not sure you've ever worked around folks in their mid to late 20s working to become a doctor.
You just wasted the absolute best years of your life studying and working your butt off.
I worked at a teaching hospital for 8 years, doctors in their residency party their faces off.

Congratulations, now you are 32 years old and out of residency making your full salary

You continue to work long hours and even take call through all hours of the night and holidays

Doctors r idiots.
Why don’t they become plumbers or welders

Theoretically, I don’t think getting an MD necessarily makes financial sense. The type of people that become doctors are smart and very driven
If they would have gone the business route, I have no doubt they would be in upper management/partner roles by the time they were low 30s making 100k+ and near the top of the totem pole making 250k or more by 40
You do that math and years lost in medical school /residency, I don’t think it makes sense financially. People compare doctors salary to the average joe at 40 to rectify it, but a doctor that chose a different route wouldn’t be in the same job as Joe Schmo

My golf buddy is a doctor. He will retire at 75
All I hear about is complainants about his job and his debt.

He said 32 years old and 300-500k in debt?

not a doc so I can't answer that but as I'm approaching mandatory retirement I'm starting to get offers from different areas and it seems I have a hell of of a lot of leverage that I didn't have early in my career, I basically say that I'd love to do whatever it is they are asking but as far as scheduling, time off, etc., I'm pretty much going to work around travel, family, sports events, etc., things that have taken a back seat in the past that I'm not going to miss out on anymore and everyone seems to get that and agrees on it

Or you can be a 32 year old doctor making $185 a year with 500 k in debt.

Great!!! Now you are 36 years and finally debt free from school while some of your friends will retire in 14 years.

pick the right speciality and you're essentially guaranteed that level of income as a doctor

$$$$$$$$$$$
That being said, there are some blue-collar jobs that pay nearly as well if not better in some cases and their rates will only go up as more boomers retire and fewer people go to trade schools. Same money with less schooling seems like a good trade-off.

there's no guarantee in that
There’s no guarantee you get the speciality you want. Truth is nothing in life is “guaranteed”. But if you are smart and driven, making a lot of money is not hard regardless of the venture you choose. People that can’t do it are either not smart or driven, and simply make excuses and lie to themselves (this doesn’t account for people that choose ventures not lucrative because that’s what they want to do)

The OP certainly whiffed on that thought. There is no such thing as a doctor who retired at 75 years old because he HAD to work to 75 for financial reasons AND managed his money well through his career.
That does not exist, not 1 single doctor has ever done exactly that above, OP is just wrong about that.

And for hiring office managers they happen to be fricking (wives) or trying to frick.

this is not a brag at all but we were having this conversation at work the other day, there may be doctors or lawyers that make as much or more as the guys in our pay group but there's none of those that do it in as few of days per month that we do, also, and this is a big thing, when we set brakes after returning home we forget about work until it's time to go again, nobody's on call, has to make rounds, no emergencies, etc.

Those were some of the best years of my life, like the extension of college. Yeah, it’s 9 years of your life, but I had a blast in those years, and it gave me the training and experience to change lives, be respected for what I do, and make millions that changed my families projection, educated my kids. People can do that in other professions, but I was just drawn to it, and just didn’t know another field I had the confidence to succeed in. The profession may have taken a hit in the last 2 years, and may be trending worse every year with corporate interference, but for some, it’s a tremendous opportunity, even now…

Because I genuinely love the subject matter and think it’s important to disseminate essential health information to patients, information that is usually only behind paywalls. No one has explained to most people basic concepts of immunology, as this pandemic has made clear.
