UPC insurance is horrible

Made a claim for some damaged wood floors from the storm and their response was that it was from wind driven rain coming through the door and that’s not covered. Only if a tree or other item comes through the house with the event have been covered. I’ve paid my premium my house is only 2 years old and maintained perfectly. There’s a special place in hell for people in the insurance world.

So you chose the wrong policy and coverage and are mad at someone else about your decisions?

Step 1: inform them that you are contesting their valuation
Step 2: hire an independent adjuster to get a valuation on your damages with which to contest their valuation
Step 3: submit a proof of loss to the insurer backed by said independent adjuster as well as receipts for materials and repairs.
If they reject that, hire a lawyer and sue.
The one good thing about UPC is that when they're sued, and they're clearly in the wrong, they settle quickly.

Found the Insurnace agent.
I pay homeowners, flood, car, health, dental and every other insurance you can probably think of and your response is I make bad decisions?

Are they wrong?

They are crooked. They will all gladly milk you of your money and then refuse to pay you what they should when something happens.

It's funny because I have several friends with UPC who are singing their praises. We have them and the field adjuster was out 3 days after we made a claim.

King, I appreciate the help. That’s what I will do

There is one inevitable truth that has been repeated countless times in the last year and that is: Insurance Companies don’t make money paying out, they make money by not paying out.
Good luck in your fight.
Good luck in your fight.

I have UPC. : /
I don’t have a claim but now I’m concerned. Who’s your agent?
Also, what insurance would cover that? Why would wind driven rain not be covered?

Consult with a first party attorney to challenge their denial.

It’s either covered in your policy or it isn’t. Read the policy.

Field adjuster doesn’t make any monetary decisions. They adjuster came in a few weeks which was fine. But this “wind driven rain” thing is semantics and completely crooked. My front door is solid. I have video of water coming through the wood itself. Not at the edges, but through the solid wood. Her response was that pressure driven water can do that and that’s what’s not covered. So you mean to tell me we experience a cat 4 hurricane and water pounds the door for hours creating porous holes and ways into the door and that’s not the same as a tree branch coming through the door? Are we talking circumferences of holes now? It’s insane. I paid the premium. It’s for event likes hurricanes, and I have a claim. Pay it, and let’s get my house fixed.

The policy I have on my house covers it.
ETA Mine covers it for the dwelling and the contents. Next step down covers it for dwelling only, the other policies do not cover it.
OP may not have known about the small differences when choosing his policy or maybe just selected the cheapest option that his mortgage would allow.

UPC is Demotech, and as an insurance agency principal, I don’t allow my agents to write Demotech companies.
That being said, wind driven rain is excluded on some policies, and most insureds are not aware.
Do you have flood insurance?

Because insurance policies are quite customizable. They’re not all the same. If you want coverage for wind-driven rain from a storm, you buy it. I’d you don’t buy it, you don’t have it.
This seems like a pretty good thread to remind everyone - if your premiums are substantially lower than your neighbors and such, don’t be shocked when your coverage is lacking.
Eta- it sucks for you OP, but it’s almost certainly in black and white in the policy documents.

If you want a real answer here it is.
A branch or a tree blown onto your home creating an opening for the water to enter and cause additional damages is covered. For the damage caused by the tree and the water that entered as a result.
If the water is blown into crevices, openings, ridge vents, between window panes, or anywhere else without any damage occurring to allow the water to enter, that is not covered.
The water didn’t create porous holes, as you put it, it was blown into/through them.
For your situation and for someone who has a policy that doesn’t cover wind driven rain, that’s the difference. If there is no damage that is allowing the water in it most likely will not be covered….if wind driven rain is not covered.
ETA This is assuming windstorm/hail is covered by your policy but wind driven rain is not.

Do you have a named peril policy? A named peril policy requires a storm relocated opening in the roof or walls to allow coverage for interior damages

It’s not at all this simplified. This isn’t like walking down grocery aisle and getting to pick and choose anything you want
