Shoot opinion - shotgun on fourth and short is the dumbest call in sports

If you have a big athletic Quarterback the “QB power” play is usually pretty effective

I'm a fan of the pistol formation setting up a running leap.

Line up under center and push it forward. Shotgun is dumb.

Agree its retarded to take the ball off the line of scrimmage 4-5 yds when your in short yardage situations

I’ve been saying this for years. Last year it cost LSU the Missouri game. 4 straight plays from the 1 in shotgun. Idiots.

As a general rule, it's not a great idea, but it depends. If you have a dude like Cam or Tebow in college taking the snap, it's not a bad call.
I still say a fade to the endzone, especially on goal-to-go situations, is worse.

If you can’t go a yard on a qb sneak… then everyone on the offense line needs to switch to ping pong or disc golf.
And snap it at first sound. Don’t try to be a hero. Just grab your balls and man up

It works way more than a goal line fade

They should also snap it with 10 seconds left on the game clock, almost no defence would see that coming

Those guys are huge. Another reason NOT to snap the ball 3-4 yards back allowing defensive penetration.

My biggest issue is shotgun on short yardage situation with no WRs on the outside. I actually think the less guys in the box the easier it is to gain a yard. I would to see a team go empty backfield on 4th and short and see what kind of plan the defense has for it.

What if you never run under center? Do you change up the QB/C exchange knowing your center is gonna get blasted?

In the modern era of analytics, I still don’t understand how on very short yardage situations the qb sneak being run multiple times in succession hasn’t become more widely used. Even if you wanted to have a designated short yardage “qb” that you consistently practiced with taking that snap and running sneaking it, it still seems far and away the most efficient play for consistently getting a yard, especially if you have multiple attempts as they rarely ever result in anything worse than a stalemate at the line.
Tom Brady is one of the least athletic QBs from a purely strength/speed standpoint and I watched that guy basically convert every sneak he attempted for damn near a decade

There is a skill to the QB sneak and Brady is the best at it. His secret is that he waits a split second for his OL to start getting a push and then goes. A lot of QBs will go before their line gets a push and they'll get stopped short. Matt Ryan did this on Sunday.

Yep. It's about awareness and Brady has more of it than anybody. Some QBs don't hesitate long enough, some hesitate too long, and some have zero vision and will run right up the arse of the one OL getting knocked backwards.
And referring to the poster talking about fade routes on goal to go, especially on 4th down, has anybody ever explained this? It makes not a single lick of common sense but coaches seem to be infatuated with the shite. I watched FSU run it on 4th down against JSU with the passing game non existent and no WRs worth a damn, a complete waste of a play that had about a 1/10 chance of success. Why not a roll out run pass option? Then the next week Auburn ran it on 4th down against Penn Sts best CB and it was even worse because they had a slot WR as an extra guy on that side of the field which just cluttered up the end zone even more.

I like under center on 4th and short, however if you are a team that is 100% out of gun, and this is potentially the biggest play of the game, why would you try something you haven't been doing or are accustom to.
