Issues with sustaining success in football

It's obviously pretty impressive that LSU in the BCS/CFP era has won three national titles with three different coaches, which is second only to Alabama's 6 in that same span.
However, of the 22 teams that have won a national championship since 1998, only four teams (not including Alabama winning last year) did not make it back tot he playoffs or play in a BCS bowl the following two seasons after their title:
- 2003 LSU
- 2005 Texas
- 2007 LSU
- 2010 Auburn
And barring a crazy turnaround this season, 2019 LSU will be the fifth.
Yeah, I guess in a way it's a good problem to have, because we are winning title, but it would be nice if we could not collapse after a title for once.

LSU is one of the few elite universities that can’t hire a high quality football coach nor keep one for any extended period of time. It’s a real head scratcher.

To use an idea from another arena, I truly think football programs are "downstream from culture" and it's why LSU does not sustain success at a high level typically. We're a pretty up and down group of people; passionate and emotionally driven. It works in our favor and against us at times. Louisiana isn't exactly the place you think of when it comes to discipline and ambition. LSU athletics generally need an outsider who can instill these things to be consistently successful.

Neither is Alabama or South Carolina, yet here we are...

Beneficiaries of the special personalities who have led them. Also do not share our high/low personalities. Saban was onto something when he came up with catastrophe syndrome.

Meh LSU has a problem of who they play also. We have to play Auburn, bama and Florida every year. Since 2000 those 4 teams have won 13 of 20 and auburn and bama have lost 2. So we are almost always playing the national champion or the team losing in the championship. I think we have been more consistent than auburn during the period in question and equal with Florida or a bit ahead of them. Obviously Saban is an anomaly.

Alabama or South Carolina
Are you sure about this?
Huntsville, AL is a top 10 growing city in the US. Birmingham also seems to be doing much better than in previous years.
South Carolina has Greenville as an emerging city with a growing tech center. Charleston seems to be getting more and more popular as not only a tourist destination but also as a viable and desirable place to live.

The issue with the non coaching CEO coach model is your either going hire coordinators that don’t work out or you will hire a good one who leaves for greener pastures. Lends itself to feast and famine.

Both AL and SC were well behind LA in population and have since passed and are growing at much faster rate.
No comparison in cities like Greenville, Hilton Head, Huntsville, Opelousas, Fairhope for raising a family compared to anything LA offers.
When all the Asian and European auto manufacturers moved to southern US production, LA was left out where multiple plants were built in SC and AL. We elect crap and we like it.

our ‘04 & ‘05 teams were both really close
‘04 screw job at Auburn (Ronnie Prude leaping) kept us out of Atlanta that year. A win in Atlanta has us in Sugar.
‘05 we went to Atlanta and played for the 485th consecutive week without a bye. Who know what a better rested team would have done.

Only LSU fans would find a way to turn 3 national titles in the past 18 years into a negative. Congrats on being a miserable person.

Where did I turn winning the national titles into being a negative?
I specifically said the seasons after.
Reading comprehension difficult for you?

The current state of early entry to the draft is a factor when considering what you are saying. In 2010 (your most recent date) there were 53. In 2020 there were 99. Everybody that could spell NFL opted out of their senior season. This left us severely depleted, making a repeat playoff run impossible. I think this is more the current norm for everyone else except for Bama.

If anything, we should’ve had at least two more. 2019 showed what everyone else knew. If LSU had a pulse on offense for the better part of Les’ tenure, they would’ve won more games.

LSU has proved they can win with pretty much anyone at HC. The talent and foundation laid is just that damn good.
Thanks Saban.

Bama has players leaving too after their junior year. Every one does, but the best teams (not just Alabama) seem to be reloading better than LSU historically, and not just reloading players, but coaching staffs too.

The only challenge with LSU football is that the greatest coach in history stopped here on his way to success and very nearly stayed, resulting in our expectation that we "demand excellence," when in fact we have done quite well in his absence, in fact, better than we did generally before his arrival.

I don’t think it’s fair to say we collapsed after 2003 and 2007. Now after 2020…..

We went 8-5 and 9-3 the next two years, in terms of prominence, we definitely collapsed.
Yeah, Perrilloux fricked shite up, but we were never going to be good in 2008 with the Malveto defense.
