audio engineer?
I don’t recall that being something you could get a degree in at a university.

Turns out, apparently you can…

Audio engineering is a very wide discipline as well as an exciting one! It blends both technology and creativity to help create and refine sounds used in music, media, and performance technology. A bachelor’s degree in audio engineering, or a related field such as music technology, recording arts, sound engineering…the list goes on, is a solid stepping stone towards a career in this competitive industry.

not someone who went to a real university and got an engineering degree, then passed the FE exam, and then got his PE so he can be officially called an "engineer".

For your average regional and local acts, you are probably right. Most of these “sound guys” can get pretty good with OJT. But for your major acts and studios, especially the lead guys, I’d put them up against any engineer. You’re talking about employing multiple disciplines to make our experiences a memorable one; art, mathematics, physics, EE, material science, meteorology, and biology. The best in the biz absolutely need to be formally trained. Just because there isn’t an industry exam they take doesn’t make what they can do any less intricate than a “traditional” engineering degree.

Ok. Then why not call them an audio doctor?

I’m not saying they aren’t talented, and that anyone can do it. It takes a lot of training I’m sure.
Engineers go to engineering schools and get a degree.
Doctors go to medical school and get a degree.

Calling people that did neither of those an engineer or a doctor is silly. That’s all. And I know my reasoning here is silly and I’m being ridiculous.

You don’t see other jobs with the title “doctor”, other than actual people with doctoral degrees. Why call someone without an engineering degree an engineer?

If they actually got a legit engineering degree and do that, then fine, but I’d be willing to bet they did not.
No different than all the people with the title Sales Engineer who don’t have engineering degrees. Some do, but most do not.

My 16 year old is interested in audio engineering, I'm trying to encourage a different career path because I think AI will eventually take over everything but running the cables. Is that a bad take by me?

I didn’t say my reasoning was legit. It’s an idiotic thing but I’ve just always found that dumb that so many “technicians” with no college degree get called engineers.

Would you put them up against any medical doctor? If so, why not call them doctors?

And I've met quite a few degreed "engineers" that I wouldn't trust to plunge my toilet much less perform their trade. A degree and a passed exam doesn't mean squat. If you take a moment to look up what it actually means to be an engineer (in general), you may change your thinking.

why not call them doctors

For the same reason we don't call medical doctors engineers.

Now for some terrible memes:

I read a story once about a sound guy at a club and the manager saw him going through his presets and saw one called "suck button". He asked him what it was and he said it was reserved for the biggest a-hole bands.

Well one night a band of douche bags was playing there. They were a-hole divas before the show but even worse after they got on stage. Apparently they started talking shite about the sound guy to the audience so on the next song he hit the suck button preset. The way it worked was it added about a half second delay to only some of the monitors.

When they started playing their timing was all off and they started getting pissed off with each other, each band member thinking the other guys were fricking up. They finally gave up and left the stage after embarrassing themselves.
