well, I think it was C-rations. huge casserole size cans that fed several soldiers. I remember being amazed how bad you can frick up scrambled eggs.
Weren’t those called T-rations?
Yes. C-Rations were the first "Happy Meal", Army style.

They are tolerable, but still quite suck
frick you. Fight me IRL. The jalapeño cheese in an MRE is the best damn thing on the planet.

C-rats and MREs are individual meals. T-rats are organizational, to serve units, heated up with steam in a field kitchen environment:

No chicken-a-la-king? No dehydrated pork patty? No beans and franks?

This was the best ring they put in MREs…

My first introduction to MRE’s was at a tent at MSY after Katrina. I was impressed being that airport Lucky Dogs weren’t available.

I did 32 years and hated MREs from the beginning in 1986. I did everything possible to not eat them and was mostly successful. I was on a field exercise when Obama won his first election, I remember being issued a "breakfast omelet" MRE. My last words were, "how can they f up a breakfast omelet?" 2 hours later I was pucking. I never tempted fate again

Pork w/Rice in BBQ Sauce Is the correct answer for the best from the 90s. Spaghetti with meat sauce and Chicken Ala King we’re tops also.

Jesus. Even $5 per seems high to me. I figured those things were made to be like $10 for a whole box of them or something. $5-$10 per is almost like a whole fast food meal.
$5 is reasonable for the warfighter MREs. The real deal. 1500 calories per MRE, so 2 a day will keep you going through exertion. $10 a day for all the nutrition you need plus some matches and toilet paper in a portable and shelf-stable form with a heater ain't too bad. The government pays less, but by the time I get it in the gray market, there's everyone's risk and profit tacked on to the cost.
These are NOT the bullshite FEMA or private manufacturer MREs that get you like 5-600 calories per MRE.

The freeze dried pork patty, covered in rehydrated ketchup powder was fine dining. JFC I hated that one and the chickenalaking.

When I first joined this was my "go to" meal...

Guess if you’re hungry enough, you will eat them

I’ll make you a ranger pudding and give you my #8 hamburger for your #22 tortellini and pound cake

This is how I know you have never spent more than 2 weeks without power and water in a Louisiana summer doing hurricane cleanup.
Unless there is a “Louisiana” in China, my money is on you being correct.

I just ate Vienna sausages and beanie weenies. Probably not an improvement

Last time I had an MRE was Katrina. They gave us some of the authentic MRE made for the military. I had a few left after the crisis passed and decided to eat them. Come to find out they were like 4000 calories apiece!
