This may very well two incidents, but is anyone seeing either of these, and where are you?

Hearing of oil on the water, I think Maurepas area.

Also hearing of dead fish floating on the river near Port Vincent.

Is there something about a hurricane that can kill fish?

Saltwater intrusion.

Hurricanes kill fish by the drop in pressure, loss of oxygen in water, saltwater intrusion etc.

So far it doesn’t look as bad as Katrina. This storm had a lot of rain associated with it, so we are seeing as many dead yet. Still an impactful kill.

Haven’t seen anything on oil spill

Water quickly gets pushed into the swamp. Tree debris on top of that, water gets sucked out and has no oxygen.
Go look in the stump hole from under any tree that fell over. It’s grey/black nasty and smelly by now.
That’s what the fish are trying to live in

I can tell you this. I crossed the causeway on Wednesday and there was a significant amount of oil on the water. Looked to be coming from NO/Slidell and heading toward manchac. The next day or maybe 2 days later I took 55 and there was a little coming through manchac pass. There was an oil spill somewhere snd no one is saying shite about it.

I was on the Tickfaw river yesterday. Dead fish are everywhere. It stinks so bad. And yes there is a oil sheen on top of the water. I think the wind churned up the muddy river bittom and released the nastiness.

Salt water, and also a quick reduction in the pH of the water caused by thousands of broken limbs entering the water which releases tannic acid.

The spillway sees this after must hurricanes.

Enormous fish kill in the Tickfaw.

Terry Harbor was covered in dead fish yesterday.

Shocking how many redfish.

Yes redfish.

Lots of dead catfish or catfish that were dying yesterday. Happens everytime a storm comes through. Lack of oxygen

Saltwater intrusion.

pretty big fish kill in the Maurepas basin due to all those things mentioned here. Turnover caused by wind along with all the added vegetation and saltwater intrusion. Bacteria get to work and use up all the oxygen in the water. Some dead end canals look like they have an oil slick on top.

I live on Chinquapin and there was a substantial fish kill in that area.
Also a heavy oily sheen on the water. It was reported but I haven’t heard an explanation for the oil.

The water has now turned deep black. And it stinks.

I’ve seen the sheen in the Spillway over the years on top of black water, full of tannic acid and no oxygen. All as captured above. Not petroleum oil, more from decayed organic matter (guess technically that’s where petroleum oil comes from).

Interesting about the report of redfish in the Tickfaw. They can live in freshwater, and although I knew Of trout being caught at times in the Fall at the mouth of the river when it didn’t rain for several weeks, redfish reports are a first for me. Had a camp just upriver from Terry Harbor for years.

Went down the Amite River today (Sept9) to Lake Maurepas. Very depressing. River stinks, water is dark. There were dead fish, mostly bream and bass at the landing. Saw gasping fish at the water’s surface.

Guys at plant that live over there said it’s very bad. Worst they’ve seen.

I think the oily sheen is just a biofilm from all the death and decay rather than anything dealing with an oil spill. The film was in the Blind, Amite, and Tickfaw and all the rivers are rolling out into Maurepas at the moment. If it was some conspiracy oil spill that they are trying to cover, I don't see how it would move up current in all of these rivers.

Solid responses, and makes sense to me. Everything y'all said was basically the same thing reported by my neighbors while I was out of town, and the same thing I'm seeing now.

While rinsing our deck near Port Vincent, there were a few 2" flounder looking fish. Neighbor said he saw hundreds of them a few days ago.

Are there freshwater flounder? or were these the real deal flounder this far north?

This is most likely the case. Hit it with a stick or a rock. If it shatters like glass it's biological.
