I'm trying to justify the cost of a home generator. I live in a neighborhood in Youngsville that has Natural Gas. If half the houses have Home Generators woulld the generators be able to still run efficiently?

I’m sure mine sucks up a decent volume. My usage for Monday was 39 ccf (that’s the only full day I see). Nat gas pressure is super low for residential service so if you had a ton of houses feeding off that service I’d imagine you COULD have service issues. I’d say probably 20% of the houses in my hood have a whole house gen and we haven’t had any issues.

Go without power for a few days, or have a gas generator you have to keep filling or worrying about. That'll justify it real quick.

I think it’s regulated down from the main feed at your meter so I think it should be ok. The biggest concern in my mind is that the plumbing is adequate from the meter to the rest of the house.

I can't justify the cost of whole-home, especially since we plan to be in this current house ~5-10 years but after seeing everyone scramble for gas I don't want to be in that position.
Costco carries a 7500w tri-fuel Firman that was on sale for $700(regularly $900) a few weeks ago, I should have bought one and will try to next time they're on sale. I can set it up on a quick-connect to my patio NG and that'll be enough to keep my refrigerators going and a window unit in the bedroom plus keep me from having to chase gasoline when there's a shortage.

the cost of a whole home generator plus installation is around $10,000, then add on the hundred plus per day to run. unless you have "frick you" money, i would take that $10,000 and invest it, and whenever you feel like you will have to use that generator, pull from your $10,000 that you invested and go on a trip somewhere. or use the money to buy a camper and get a smaller generator to run the camper and stay in it for a few days til your power comes back on. you will get way more out of a camper than you will that generator.

Best bet is to ask your gas supplier.

It does not cost us $100+ per day or run at all. In fact I don’t even notice a difference on the Entergy bill because we aren’t using any electric power during the time the generator is running.

That's exactly what I did. I had a gas line run outside of the house for my pool heater and I plumbed in a quick connect gas connection for the generator. The Saturday before the storm I hooked the generator to the gas line and it fired right up. Didn't need it this time but having the tri fuel option is good because whatever fuel source we can find, we can use.
That being said, any gasoline generator can be fitted with a tri-fuel conversion kit. US Carburetion

If I were really in charge, I’d have a hookup and a panel, and I would put the breakers for fridge, freezer, garage fridge/freezer, and master bed lights + either a wall plug for a small portable AC or my central (a 2.5T unit that serves this room and a “nursery”) on it
But I’m not in charge, so the generator guy is coming next week to sell an oversized unit that’s going to run everything, because my father in law convinced my wife it’d be too hard after a storm to move a wheeled unit, Plug in two lines, and flip four to six switches.

not even close to $100 per day. Westlake where i am right now has the highest NG prices in the state and higher than NYC. we ran our all last september and bill was only like $1600 for the month.
as far as having enough gas....plenty coming in but you need to get with atmos and have them verify the regulator is sized for the unit you want to install to provide correct pressure.

I have this one and have been running off of natural gas during Ida. Its been great not having to worry about fuel. Only catch is, depending on what you're trying to run, you do lose some power. Its only rated for 5,500 watts I believe on natural gas.

Under $30 per day for my 22kW standby gen. I’ll take that. My electric bill is about $8. So for about $20 per day net, my gen keeps me up and running in full. Well worth it.
