Tallest building in downtown Lake Charles may have to be demolished

Not only the tallest, but one of the newest as well. It's been a year since the Capital One Tower sustained heavy damage from 130 mph winds during Hurricane Laura. There are rumblings about the 22 story building being demolished.

Some know it as the Calcasieu Marine Tower, others as the Hibernia Tower, and more recently, The Capital One Tower.
“Growing up, there was always this connection between the City of Lake Charles skyline and the Capital One Tower,” Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter said. “It’s almost synonymous with the City of Lake Charles.”

What was once a tower with windows, now sits empty and replaced with plywood after Hurricane Laura targeted the tower.
“It’s just heartbreaking to see it in the shape it’s in today, you know,” Allen said.
But, one year later, the question remains: will the tower tumble or continue to stand?
“Where we stand today, emotions matter, but to try and be realistic about the situation matters,” Hunter said. “It is public knowledge that the owners of the Capital Tower are going through litigation with their insurance company right now.”
Nic Hunter says he’s had an open conversation with the owners.
“I’m saying things to you right now that I have said to them - face to face,” Hunter said. “We would love to see the building renovated, obviously, that would be great for the City of Lake Charles. I think that, realistically, if that’s going to happen, it’s going to have to be repurposed. It probably wouldn’t all be office space as it was before.”
While many consider the tower an icon, Hunter says there are worse things that could happen besides the building being torn down.
“While it pains me to say this, I would rather see the tower torn down than see it stay the way it is today for an extended period of time.”

Why are we just now finding this out a year later?

A condo tower would be kind of cool.
I mean, if you are going to repurpose it, at least make it something viable. Office towers are done in the Covid era.

It was being discussed not long after the hurricane.

The new owners of the Pile of Debris casino license should relocate to the building and repurpose it for their hotel.

frick you bro, that shite looks good in that picture, dont care what you say.
i will say as a resident of what many consider "downtown" I would like to see it repurposed, but i am 100% in agreement with the mayor, rather it torn down that sit like it is. its insane how bad the damage is. needs to be completely gutted to metal studs and redone. oh and the window system needs to be redone. Other buildings in the area dont suffer the windows breaking like that building did during rita and laura.

What's the issue with the carrier not wanting to pony up?

Are there that many people in Lake Charles aspiring to condo life?
That building, like many other opulent bank buildings across dilapidated America seems like an economic failure, a waste of somebody else’s money to stroke the ego of an overpaid bank executive.

Why wouldn't they put the museum ship closer to their downtown? Like sort of where Harrah's used to be.

I know they used to do a haunted ship during Haloween on the old battleship. Imagine doing one on the old casino boat.

Yeah……until the next hurricane comes.

Prior to Laura, it only had about 40% occupancy. It's not like they were having to beat businesses away from renting space.
