Other than the reason of them having shite for brains, they also value the effort to avoid further embarrassment with another deadly incident, this time perhaps involving American citizens/civilians making their way through the streets, they place way more value on that than whatever may come of the folks they're leaving behind and abandoning. All for purely political purposes, of course.

It’s bad PR. Before it was made public that folks were doing it the administration could ignore it. But at some point you get too many amateurs forcing the issue and you have to deal with it. Right and wrong are less important than controlling the narrative.

They can quietly pull 82nd guys out of country for not following orders and allowing a group or two through but at some point guys are going get bold and force a checkpoint or not bribe the taliban and get into trouble. That puts the administration in a bad spot. How do you tell marines and soldiers that they just have to watch it happen.
