Home appliance insurance (AC included)

Anyone have experience (good, bad, indifferent) regarding appliance insurance, including for your air conditioner?
I have a 15+ year old AC unit, along with really old kitchen appliances. I know my time is coming soon, so starting to look into any options that might help me out.

Mixed bag. Expect delays.
Standard procedure. Tech comes to your home. Does not have the part. Leaves to “submit the claim and order part”. You never hear from them again unless YOU call. You never hear from warranty company unless YOU call.
Techs ive gotten have ranged from a very competent in and out in 30 minutes to a guy who made multiple visits where he leaned on my washing machine (broken item) watching YouTube videos for techs. Lol

Just read an article about a couple of real estate agents in Bossier who are getting burned on their home warranty.
LINK
There was also a NextDoor thread full of folks talking about horrible experiences with plumbing issues when they made a home warranty claim. A local plumbing company serviced the claims but did half-arse or unfinished work that the owners often had to redo with another plumber at their own expense. It was stunning how many people reported similar experiences.

Newton says that at the end of June, both air conditioning units that cool their spacious home in the Oak Alley neighborhood broke down. So Jonathan and Ginger Newton filed a claim with their home warranty company, American Home Shield.
But it’s only gotten them hot under the collar. There've been seemingly endless delays and lack of communication.
“We hate that we have sold this policy in the past, and we're seeing exactly how they've been treating clients,” Ginger Newton said.
Asked whether home warranties are a good idea, Bob Davis with the Better Business Bureau warns, "It can be but it can also be a nightmare.”
The Newtons say their own air conditioning repair company stopped working with American Home Shield, because they did not pay them on time. Their repairman also says that American Home Shield would rather do band-aid fixes, and not fully repair a problem, which puts the local company’s reputation at risk.

I’ve been in the business for about twenty years. I’m proud of our company- it isn’t Ahs. But I could tell you hundreds of stories where the seller has been adding Freon or coolant to a hvac unit and calling it good. They sell the house unit goes out, tech arrives and does some research and determines that it’s pre-existing condition.
If you are adding Freon or coolant to a unit there is a leak that needs to be repaired.
Or an inspection is performed for the buyer, red flags on the report seller doesn’t want to do anything so they provide a warranty.
Everyone wants everything covered, but they only want the warranty program to cost $400.

As someone who works in the HVAC industry, I would say, do not do home warranty, 1st issue is most very reputable companies will not work with them, because home warranty companies don't pay enough for them to spend the time on home warranty calls. 2nd issue is I've seen parts and equipment orders placed under home warranty accounts sit for 3 or 4 weeks before being picked up. And lastly they will only pay for the parts or equipment, they don't pay for a new plenum, drain pans etc.

I’m sure this happens and yes the main reason they are offered is incentive on an older home that may have issues.
But most AC coolant leak issues are around $400 to fix. Many of them are basic repairs. Sure some require a new part more than that. But it’s not often going to make sense to not fix an AC coolant leak and instead purchase a $400 warranty. The math just isn’t there to not do it right.
Op, your situation doesn’t really make sense for this. You’d be better off taking the $400 and putting that to new equipment.

On the other hand, I’m seeing HVAC technicians are stating because of the recent regulations regarding R22 and R410A, a minor $400 patch is not possible.

Sit 3 or 4 weeks - that ridiculous. We let our technicians supply their own equipment.
I under the warranty isn’t for everyone, but trust me we have to keep our costs low. If we paid standard or about standard rates the warranty would cost around $700 and I don’t think many would pay for a contract in that price range.

Horrible in my experience. Water heater went out. Tech came out, said it would be $900 more than covered due to “code issues”….
I spoke with a plumber friend who laughed out loud. Called company and asked for a second opinion. They said no. They offered me $500 to settle. I called Lowe’s, they I stalled it all for $750 ….. no “code issues”

When we bought our 1st house it came with a free year of American home shield warranty.
I was stupid enough to get suckered into renewing it 2 additional years.
I’ve yet to experience anything more aggravating than trying to deal with those assholes.
