Been fishing out of Shell Beach and catching mostly small trout if any trout at all. Is this normal? What area of Louisiana's coast is much better for trout if Shell Beach is fished out?

It's just a little early. Larger trout will move in when the weather cools off. Getting closer.

The fishing in Shell Beach will be significantly better when the fish transition back to the marsh. From October to May is when I would assess how good the fishing is there. Run east to the outside in Hopedale/Delacroix for more consistent trout until the fish start coming in which will happen with the first few fronts in September.

Yes. In the summer the bigger fish move out with the bait. Try fishing outside edges or other structure outside the edge of marsh systems that lead to gulf.

All over really. Lake Borgne, at the end of the rocks out of MRGO, on out into Chandeluer Sound, around Comfort Island. We are new to the area so maybe just don't know where to go. Catching a lot of small trout but very few keepers.

Your fishing the right areas. Now through the end of Sept. is notoriously difficult for trout. In late Oct. it will pick back up.

Have you run into any redfish or jack crevalle balls? They congregate in big groups right now. I'd maybe seek out other fish to chase.

Should be getting some decent fish at some of those spots. Reefs will hold small fish this time of year. Also fishing under birds this summer has seemed to bring smaller fish. As others have mentioned fall fishing its where it's at.

We catch a few redfish and sheepshead. Still trying to figure it all out though

That's the fun part. As fisherman this is an ongoing pursuit. You will start putting the pieces together in short time. Keeping a log will help.

I'm organized enough to start a log but not organized enough to keep up with it

I'm not 100% on it and I have organizational struggles. I try to document what I can but don't kill myself on detail. I'll put down areas I fished, tide, moonphase, water clarity, bait activity, etc.. I try to put down what sticks out. I think area fished, tide phases fished, water clarity and bait are the main factors. If you have all those factors present then I'll switch up what lure I'm using to see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like you're fishing the right general areas. There are a lot of small fish out there right now for sure but as we near the fall the larger ones will be coming back from deeper waters. We did well on reefs in Xmas Camp Lake, Treasure Bay, etc. toward Comfort island and nearby islands last weekend.

White trout have been surprisingly good sized as well

Do you just fish all up in the PVC poles? Are the reefs laid out a certain way? I've been trying to explore that area.

I caught 84 keeper white trout/specks mixed just drifting reefs on lakes/bays north of the MRGO long rocks two weeks ago. Tons of small fish but we picked through and put together a really good box. That area is so big, so fish fast. If you pull up on birds or an oyster reef, give it 5 minutes and move. Once you catch a few, then you can alter presentation and change color to dial it in. I look for clean water, bait, moving water, slicks, structure, and basically anything that is different. It’s so easy to get lazy while out there but if you fish fast, you will catch more fish 100%.

Went two weeks ago and caught a ton of little trout. Just need more time.

Caught some nice size redfish though.

Full moon and high pressure are hurting fishing now. I fished Comfort this past Sunday. Morning fishing will pick up when the full moon goes, and the rising tides come in later in the morning. The water was greenish and reasonable clear. The fish will be there.

The fish are still out around the comfort area in the fall?
