Since day #1 of the COVID pandemic, all of the efforts at lockdowns and "slow the spread" was based on ONE thing.

Hospital beds

We don't want to overwhelm the hospital system.

That's it.

We are dealing with a virus that has almost a 99% survival rate.

It is absolutely ridiculous to the place we are at now. The hospitals are understaffed or they are running out of beds. So, the entire population needs to be at "code red".

Only 27 ICU beds available for 6.6 million people in Greater Houston Area

Only 27 ICU beds available for 6.6 million people in Greater Houston Area; state says total of 329 in Texas

Wear a Mask! - why? Hospital beds

Get the Vaccine! - why? Hospital beds

Stay at home! - why? Hospital beds

Saw on the local news a small town hospital CEO calling out the governor wanting help due to staffing shortages and being unable to safely care for patients as a result. At one time that’s the kind of thing CEOs were held accountable for. Now they want to blame it on the governor. Get the government to pay for staff with tax dollars so it doesn’t hit the bottom line to protect their bonuses.

What pisses me off is the entire point for hospitals is to be full in terms of beds regardless of what is happening.

Hospitals WANT beds to be at full capacity

Hospitals were told this was the new normal. Should’ve staffed up and expanded with that extra 20% received for “COVID” patients.

This is still and has always been about money. Hospitals are at minimum staffing to maximize profit, and they were getting tons of money from the gubmint for “cases”. So of course they are admitting everyone they can “out of an abundance of caution”.

That’s why those triage centers were barely used everywhere they were set up. The hospital ships in New York saw what, 60 patients? The triage in New Orleans had room for 1000 people and saw like 6? Hospitals don’t make money sending patients to triage centers.

I think beds is a big part of it, but also the larger overrun of the medical system.

The Urgent Care by my house - the place we are told to go for minor issues that don't require ER - is only currently seeing people who need a COVID test - either due to symptoms or to get out of quarantine.

The pharmacies near us are closing down early and running out of supplies. Getting prescriptions filled is taking longer.

I also think the specter of otherwise healthy people dying from this - it's rare but it's not unheard of - is causing a lot of panic.

But with hospital beds... the problem is our healthcare system doesn't carry a lot of excess capacity because no one wants to pay for it. And clearly, it's not easy to scale up when necessary.

Looks like we need to flatten the curve.

Hospitals shut down elective surgeries for a good portion of 2020. Hospitals lost money, furloughed staff, and reduced hospital capacity. Now, they are firing hospital staff for refusing a vaccine mandate, the result? Reduced hospital capacity.

And remember they're firing nurses for not getting the jab in Houston therefore creating a much worse situation. Where are the Boards of Directors that should be asking what the hell these overpaid CEO's are doing?

High hospitalization rates equals high profits, especially with the enhanced payments.

Boom

The greater Houston area has about 1 hospital bed per 500 people. That is it.

An ICU can fill up on a busy weekend pre Covid. There typically aren’t that many beds.
